United Kingdom Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals (Joe D'Amato)

Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals Blu-ray REVIEW

It would be good if Severin, or another label, upgrade the Black Emanuelle box set. Some of these films have really nice soundtracks

Is this truly uncut as there was a guy on the Amazon.co.uk site blasting it for being 3 minutes or so shorter than the Shriek Show DVD? I have seen this movie enough times to think that it isn't well not in terms of sex and gore anyway.

He was replying to my user review. I stupidly said it was down to NTSC-PAL which he rightly corrected me on.

It's a bit confusing.

If you look at the back of the Shriek Show DVD case, it states a 90 minute running time;

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Emanuelle-...-/361474276601

You can see a large pic of the back of the case on the listing above.

This also ties in based on a comment on this page;

http://www.mondo-esoterica.net/Emanu...Cannibals.html

Under the 'The DVD' section it says that the UK DVD was cut by 1m 58s by the BBFC.

This ties in with the BBFC entry;

http://www.bbfc.co.uk/releases/emanu...cannibals-2001

Which would seem to confirm an uncut running time of 89m 22s, ie 90 minutes.

Here's where it gets confusing.

The latest entry with the BBFC says that it was passed uncut at 176m 17s - this obviously covers both the English language version and the Italian version (no idea why there's a 1 second difference?!) - yielding a passed 'uncut' run time of c88m 8s - doesn't quite tally with the 89m 22s Shriek version.

More confusing, despite this being the runtime on the BBFC website, the movie itself (both language versions) actually run for a few seconds under 92m - this ties in with the back of the box, and our own entry here;

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Emanu...126949/#Review

And then the final note - according to IMDb, there are three cuts of the movie - 85m, 87m and 94m?!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075984/

In short, I'm now more confused than I was when I first started looking.....

Looking at DVD compare:

http://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/film.php?fid=2748

http://www.dvdcompare.net/comparison....php?fid=35691

So according to them no cuts.

I think that would be my conclusion too.

Certainly the content that was cut for the 1m 58s - that's back in.

I never saw the cut version so I can't say for sure if this is different but I certainly can't see where anything is missing from the 88 Films BD conpared to the Shriek Show.

It's not. At the end of the day, the Shriek version looks to be 90m. This cut from 88 Films is 92m. Not sure exactly why he thinks this new version is cut. I'd ask him to outline what he thinks the cuts are.

If there is anything missing it's not any of the gore or nudity, that's all there.

I believe it to be fully uncut, at least compared to the Shriek Show DVD.

Maybe another 88 Films basher. There are quite a few if you read the reviews on Amazon. In some cases you get reviewers slating discs before they have even seen them just on presumptions.

Sad if true.

Only thing I can think of is a minor difference in the credits maybe. Other than that, as per above, I really can't see that this one is cut.

This is why you should have to pass an intelligence test before being allowed to review stuff on Amazon. It really is a maelstrom of ****wittery on there.

The Shriek Show disc is 92:48 according to ofdb.de while dvdcompare does not give a length to it? While the Blu-Ray is only 91:56 (according to dvdcompare).

That kind of difference could easily be explained by some extra logos or just blackness or something at either the start or end of the movie (with some spaghetti western discs there has been a minute or two of difference simply because the music goes on at the end (after the picture turns black) on one disc and is cut short on another).

Then again with these Italian movies there is always the chance something small is missing but nobody just realizes it.

If I have understood the ofdb site correctly the shorter runtime there (91:29) is with the end credits (and everything after them) removed.

Don't no why, simply asked him to tell us where the cuts are and he disappeared. He also said something about DVD Compare using the masters to say it was uncut.

Without having both discs playing side by side it doesn't look like it's going to be easy to tell one way or the other.

If that runtime for the Shriek Show disc above is correct then clearly something has been excised from the UK disc. In all likelihood, whatever's missing has never gone before the BBFC, either originally, or now, as we know for the new disc that all previous BBFC cuts have now been re-instated. What we don't know, is what was cut from the master before it was submitted to the BBFC in the first place.

I suspect that the difference between the Shriek Show DVD and the 88 BD is extended credits, or something else equally as meaningless, but without both discs playing side by side it's impossible to say for sure.

Apparently the ultimate cut of this movie is 94 minutes, which would mean that even the Shriek Show DVD is incomplete.
