For everyone who said the PQ was so great, i really don't think it is. Is it just me? and is anyone else kind of sick of having widescreen movies instead of full screen?

As for Black Snake Moan, it's on my short list of titles to pick up. It looks like an interesting movie and I'm a big fan of Samuel L. Motherf***ing Jackson. ![]() |

Zoom function lowers resolution of the picture. Zoom is the most useless invention ever.
I love how many high def movies on HBO etc. use the 1.78 ratio. At 1.78, I can live with the small loss of picture. You will usually get everything that is important to the frame. You might lose a bit of scenery, but its much better then 1.33. I can live with 1.85 also, but once you get 2+, it kinda sucks. I bought a 62" tv so I could see a big picture. I would rather sacrifice some picture info, that means nothing, in order to get a nice big picture. I get more into the movie if it fills the screen. |

it's widescreen, there is no such thing as a full screen blu-ray.
Full screen had a 4:3 ratio, Widescreen can both be 1.85 (16X9) or 2.35 (which has black bars on the top of bottom) insisting that you don't want the black bars on the top of bottom really isn't that logical because your cutting off the sides of the frame. The ratio is an artistic choice from the director go back to vhs if you want to cut the frame off. |

What is this, 1994? How is it possible that we're still discussing aspect ratios after all of this time? An even better question is - how is it possible that there are BD early adopters willing to sacrifice part of the image of a given film in order to have it fill up their TV screen?
The human race is doomed. This thread proves it. |

Yeah, I prefer widescreen. It took a while to get used to it, but I went through all that when the first DVDs started showing up in widescreen. And that was a LONG time ago. It is kinda odd that there are still people that prefer losing the left and right of the picture. I now have a widescreen TV, but I still have to put up with the black bars every once and a while. I am still more ok with that that losing something I should still be seeing. I'm glad we are not seeing fullscreen AND widescreen BD. It was a real ***** for companies to put out both versions and even worse for consumers that had to make sure they weren't picking up the wrong copy. Some were well marked, many many others were not. Nothing worse than getting home and popping in a new DVD and finding out that the sides were chopped off. UGH.

BTW: The difference between 1.78:1 and 1.85:1 is small enough that I'm not going to complain if they encode 1.85:1 movies at 1.78:1. That is a small enough amount to be similar to overscan. --Darin |

i think I see what hes saying.
I like widescreen. But hes saying, with all the money we've spent, if its truly like the theaters, then it should be shown like the Theater. why is it that with all the technology we cant get widescreen without the Black bars. What he says makes since. With all the money on equipment, we should hav ewidesceen without bars, and no loss of quality. I dont think what hes asking is too far-fetched. Or is it that no1 wants to accknowledge any flaws in what weve spent 1000 of dollars on? Truth be told, the Moviez dont have Black-bars, neither should our moviez. Truly to be like the Theaters, would to have he widescreen effect, no loss of quality, no loss of picture, without the Black-bars. Is that hard to understand? Its 2008 it should be possible and standard in all homes. |

Chopping off the sides doesn't make a movie like the theaters, it makes it less like the theaters. That is why it is called Original Aspect Ratio. Like at the theater. Then ask for 2.35:1 displays or get a front projector and set it up as 2.35:1, like commercial theaters. --Darin |

This is completely maddening. Guess what guys, TVs commonly come in only TWO shapes, 4:3 and 16:9. Movies come in MANY formats and not just the ones mentioned here. You are NEVER going to have a display where all content has no black bars unless you find a display that changes shape or use a projector and a masking system (which is really a display that changes shape).

Why would you want something in Full Screen? They lop off a 1/3 of the picture when they do this and the camera pans back and forth. I'd rather watch the film in the aspect the director shot it in. The black bars aren't really all that annoying.
