I agree the Chevy Chase/Carpenter version was quite good, but Chevy Chase is better than Depp

Low expectations, but the choice of writers gives me hope. Plus I'm a huge mark for Universal monsters.

EDIT: The fact that they have Depp on board tells me that they are taking this UMU seriously.

Default The Invisible Man - Part of the Universal Monsters Universe

Still a shared universe. We don't know what's going on with Dracula yet though. Solo films all seem to be coming first. I expect we'll hear more from Wolfman, Frankenstein, and Creature from the Black Lagoon before they focus on Dracula. They could still use Evans if they wanted, but I've been hearing they're trying to quietly sweep it under the rug.

The Cruise casting in The Mummy says it too me too. I'm glad to see the characters being taken seriously. It's awesome. I'm all in for this cinematic universe. I love the Universal Monsters.

8 years later will we have Team Dracula vs. Team Frankenstein? Maybe they have a difference of opinion on how to extend human life.

I suspect Universal is trying to create some sort of buzz around these films by banking on what they consider to be the box office draw of A-list actors like Cruise and Depp. I think Universal feels that its necessary to attach "star power" to these films to draw people in, which speaks for itself. I'm reminded of the travesty that was "Interview with the Vampire". In that film, neither Tom Cruise nor Brad Pitt (of all people) were believable in a horror film. I would prefer to see casting choices more in line with the idea of a cast that would be suitable for and believable in a horror genre film. Just my two cents.

That's funny because the inclusion of Cruise and Depp makes me think they aren't taking these classic cult characters seriously at all. Sacrilege actually.

The fact that they're making them purely action movies should say everything.

Depp is a great choice considering Claude Raine's performance in The Invisible Man. He seems like a good fit for the material.

Erm, well yeah. Hollywood is still a business, of course they're going to be attaching big names stars to their films to try and get audiences to watch it. Shouldn't it be the other way, that Hollywood stars are happy to star in these projects might be an indicator of potential quality?

I hope it's more of a psychological horror/thriller like Hollow Man than a CGI-fest with a bumbling 'hero' like The Mummy, but suspect I am a) in the minority and b) will be proved wrong when the final product is released.

Please be good, please be good. A new Invisible Man film has SO much potential for thrills and excitement given today's CGI wizardry.

I think he's saying that he can see Depp doing what Raines did, saying Depp is good for the role because he can see him in it.

Definitely. I'm just trying to clear up what I'm assuming is misunderstanding. Raines is one of the all time great performances in any monster film, but I can see Depp running with it and doing something similar. It'll never be Raines, but he can still capture the magic of the film and do something with it.

You missed the point completely that I was making. Why is it necessary to add some A-list actor to these films in order to sell tickets to these films? This ploy is done by Hollywood when there isn't a lot of confidence that the film can stand on its merits and earn enough box office profits without the perceived draw of an A-list actor. Neither Cruise or Depp have the appeal in terms of a horror film to draw me to either of these films, simply because neither of them are a fit and believable in terms of a horror film. And simply because Cruise or Depp are in a film is not an indicator of the film's quality. Both of them have been in films that have been real duds. It simply means to me that the studio is dumping a lot of money into these films, and depending on the so-called box office draw of Cruise and Depp to make money on these films. Doesn't sound to me that Universal feels these films could make money without the addition of a so-called A-list actor. Just my two cents on the subject

Yep that's exactly what I meant, Raines' performance was superb and very distinctive. I can totally see why they chose a quirky actor like Depp for this.
