I'm pretty new to home theater audio equipment. I just picked up the Marantz SR5010 receiver and the pair of bookshelf Pioneer Elite SP-EBS73-LR. I know I can get 5.1.2 for the Atmos with those speakers, but can I get 5.1.4 if I buy the tower Pioneer Elite SP-EFS73? The back of my receiver has 7 channels. Is it possible to hook up 5 channels and 4 atmos speakers? Sorry that I know nothing lol.

If the receiver is only 7.2 that would mean you can do 5.2 and on pair of Atmos speakers. You probably can do 4 if you have an external amp for the 2nd pair - sine your amp can only do 7.2 internally.

In order to get a true 5.1.4, you would need either a 9 channel receiver or some of the higher end (+$1200-$1500) 7.2 receivers do have the extra processing power for additional channels. And with the addition of an external amp, it would be able to send the correct sound information. We looked at a few of these receivers and they all had a pre-amp output labeled Height 2. To get 4 overhead speakers, you would have to wire your heights together, but I complained that they would play the same... |

I can't tell, I am not familiar with your receiver. It depends what channels are assignable or not.
In my opinion, I don't think the folks at Denon or Marantz yet know how there are going to change to an Atmos led home theater world. Most "affordable" Atmos 7.2 receivers are stuck at 7 channels, which is 5.2.2 max. When obviously the preferred is 5.2.4 or 7.2.2 or 7.2.4. I think AVR's need to be more versatile. I would like to be able to expand without having to do a costly upgrade. For instance, I start with a base 5.2, and if you want to add some heights, you can just by a 2channel amp and plug in and get a 5.2.2, and later if you want to add two more, just buy another 2channel amp, and 5.2.4 and so on. |

I actually have my PS3 set to bitstream then the Onkyo does the DSU. I know for the Atmos titles you have to have it set that way. I'll have to try it on a LPCM source.
