Germany Colossus - The Forbin Project (April 29, 2016)

Another classic science fiction film will soon make its debut on blu-ray:

http://www.bluray-disc.de/blu-ray-fi...n-blu-ray-disc

Ostalgica's release of This Island Earth was crap, however, so I don't have high hopes for this.

Universal should remaster all their classic sci-fi films, and not just the monster movies.

Great news. Hope Ostalgica will get a decent master from Universal and they wont over compress it this time.

Okay, it's out. I don't know if this is any indication as to how the actual blu-ray looks, but there are a few caps of the movie on the amazon.de page:

I've seen only one comment so far that mentions it's filtered so doesn't sound promising. The U.K. DVD is a bit rough despite being wide but the German DVD is supposed to be good. I'll wait for more comments to see if it's an upgrade from my UK disc at least but I'm not expecting anything close to a stellar presentation.

It does look better than the german and uk DVD to my eyes, but it isn't a stellar disc by no means. The movie file is only 10.6gb, so pretty small.
The uk dvd is definitely the worst; even the german dvd is a clear improvement.

a snapshot

uk dvd

german dvd

german blu-ray

Do you have a blu-ray shot at a higher res than the DVD?

That one shot does look like an improvement although the file size is a bit scary. Any blatant compression issues? Decent price at the moment but I think I still want to pay less for something that could almost certainly be much improved upon.

Several higher resolution snapshots in link below; just zoom in max to get the real size pic.

Thanks for those. It might be DNR filtered, but it looks FAR better than the THIS ISLAND EARTH blu-ray release.

From those it looks like a typical old Universal master. Some filtering, some sharpening but overall looks to be an improvement and way better than the UK DVD with it's aliasing and interlacing especially. The compression can be a bit hideous though such as the President's suit in the third shot. That's not looking at it with caps-a-holic 50000% zoom glasses, just normal size and distance. Could have easily been avoided too. I'll see how the price goes. It's not long since I last watched it so I'm not in a major rush to see it again. I noticed This Island Earth is getting another issues next month in a "Final Edition" which is only 11 Euros now.

Comparison between German DVD and new German Blu Ray:
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/171645

The Blu Ray is a mess!
Old Master with lots of filtering and bad encode.

I decided to bite the bullet and ordered the Blu-ray. Colossus is a personal favorite movie! Can anyone tell me who owns the Blu-ray is it 25p or 23.97?
thanks

Based on that comparison, the BD still looks better than the German DVD (the next best version).

I think I'll order this.

It's a tough one, which is why I don't want to spend much on it. The master I can forgive. We're 10 years into the format and complaining about Universal masters has done very little unless it's one of their cash cows. It's definitely an improvement and to be honest, the UK DVD gets almost unwatchable at some points which is where I am at the moment.

On the other hand, you would hope that the film has a large enough cult following to be released elsewhere. The compression in the lodge shot for instance is pretty inexcusable so the moment a better version comes along I would be looking to ditch this one.

I picked this up because I like the film and I have grown tired of waiting for an official region one release from Universal. Catalogue titles themselves have become an endangered species on Home video, just read Bill Hunts depressing editorial on the state of affairs: http://thedigitalbits.com/columns/my...ts/050416_1600

The article is heavily skewed for 4k releases, but there are many depressing truths about the sad state of affairs concerning the studios continued interest in releasing Catalogue titles!

Received my Blu-ray Disc today. I'm very happy that I made the purchase, this is a favorite film, but unfortunately, this is precisely the kind of title that the Studios are forgetting about now, so unless Universal Licenses this to Shout or Twilight time we may never see it. Quite frankly if it was TT, it would probably look identical, since they do not spend any money on restorations. The previous home video versions were hit and Miss, I have the laserdisc, which is Letterboxed. However when Universal released it on DVD it was a 4X3 pan and Scan version, I then ordered the R2 DVD from the uk which looks just ok!, but this looks really good, what you would expect from a 60's film with really no marquee stars in it. For Colossus this is probably as good as it gets, it's R2, and defaults to Danish, but has an english track. I own a multi region Blu-ray player so it is great. If you want this movie, right now this is the best release currently available.
