Then I misinterpreted what reanimator wrote. What's so special about the 2016 HDR TVs over the 2015 ones?

Not a lot, they support full range HDR but not all, in fact very few support Dolby
It's just another format

If it's full range HDR, then couldn't they get a FW update to support it later? It seems like Dolby Vision is getting into this a little too late and mucking things up.

Can't see how the studios will release discs with Dolby Vision when 99.887% of the 4K TVs out in the wild won't support it.

I know. I meant in the future. A few people here are calling the Samsung UHD player a deal breaker because it doesn't support Dolby Vision so I suppose they expect it's a strong possibility they they will someday.

Well, seeing as the Dolby Vision discs will have an HDR10 base layer anyway they'll still be able to produce an HDR grade with current HDR equipment.

Yes, Dolby Vision needs just metadata on the disc, then it's up to the TV/Player to decode it...

I don't yet, just futureproofing. (My folks have one, funnily enough, but not a UHD player.)

Ok, wait a minute. If I see an HDR movie at a Dolby Cinema that they advertise is Dolby Vision, is the UHD disc that comes out right now also Dolby Vision or is the above inferring that there will be a later release that will be the Dolby Vision one??????

So it only needs the TV or the player to be compatible? (as long as the TV has HDR10 or higher)

You'd still need the same base chain as of now to view the HDR10 layer (HDR TV + UHD BD player). For a Dolby Vision™ disc you'd still get the HDR10 layer using that same base chain, but if you want to see the specific DV grade you'd need both a player and a TV that supports it.

Thanks for the info. I thought Dolby Vision was an all or nothing deal, glad to hear it's not.

There is some additional perceived resolution on wide / special effect shots (the Hermes orbiting Mars or Earth).

"So it's kinda good but it's got this and that wrong with it while this and that is better and I had to change my settings anyway"

That's basically gonna be the template for UHD reviews from here on out
