Default Deleted scenes: Fact or fiction? (Possible Spoilers)

My thanks to member JackForrester, because his avatar image from Jaws started the idea of this thread for me and his explanation of it.

I just find this subject really fascinating and I want to learn more. Perhaps I've overlooked some of these in the 'Extras', however are there actual deleted scenes to our favourite films that only exist in trailers or lost stills. Have some deleted scenes never been released? Are some of them just urban myth?

Jaws (1975)

An unused still for the Kintner boy's death (was this even filmed?)

The death of the rower in the pond seemed to be more violent, as he was carried in the mouth of the shark.

The Exorcist III: Legion (1990)

The infamous head morph by the Gemini killer, shown briefly only in the trailer.

Deleted scene of the death of the first priest. Spoilers as might be upsetting to some.
[Show spoiler]

Aliens (1986)

Burke found cocooned by Ripley.

The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

Another kissing scene between Luke and Leia.

I remember seeing a picture of that Burke scene from Aliens in a magazine before I saw the movie. I was disappointed when it never made it to the directors cut.

Here's one that's annoyed me for years - Abel Ferrara's King of New York - I read a review* that said the best scene in the entire movie was a gory backstreet torture scene. I love the movie but I've never found any other information on that scene apart from the fact that 'some violent scenes were cut for an R-rating'.

*The review was in one of those horror fanzines common at the time in the UK when they'd review bootlegs, pirates and timecodes because we had zero chance of getting anything violent or gory uncut in the UK. To make it worse, I ended up buying tapes from one of the contributors and didn't bother getting King of New York in favour of things like Clockwork Orange and Nekromatik which, obviously, would be a lot more difficult to come by in future and would always be rare and precious.

Bugged me for years. I'd love to see an unrated, fully uncut version even on VHS.

Speaking of Abel Ferrara, I'd like Bad Leiutenant with the original soundtrack please, even though it's something I do have on VHS, it's not the same watching a 5th generation VHS.

Nolan never releases his deleted scenes from his movies. Apparently, The Dark Knight Rises had more footage of Bane's backstory but those never made on video.

I'd love to see the original three-hour cut of Annie Hall with the murder mystery plot. Alas, Woody Allen's like Nolan and never releases his deleted scenes (there's also a totally different version of September with Christopher Walken in one of the roles in the MGM vaults).

And there's James Gunn's cut of Scooby-Doo that was closer to his script before Warner Bros. and the director cut all the edge. Though a number of the cut scenes are out there (such as Velma in group therapy), a few more have never been seen (such as a scene where Mystery Inc. is shown getting high instead of it being a fake-out like in the opening). We could have gotten a fun, Mystery Men-type cult film but instead we were given a typical play-it-safe family film.

I am still waiting for the deleted prologue from Stephen King's Cat's Eye to be finally released. A mother firing a machine gun at the cat and such seen in early screenings.

Some of the gore scenes from Maximum Overdrive. The picture below the second Star Trek cover farther down of a Cinefantastique magazine page scan with the Bible salesman's face coming off. In the link below.

There's another myth about Dark Knight Rises that it's actually a good movie

There's a version of the shooting script floating around online with the deleted Bane stuff in it, but it doesn't amount to much. Basically Bane getting the training that Bruce does in Batman Begins.

Lol.

Just remember another one: Exodus had a four hour cut but the blu-ray release only has something like 15 minutes of deleted scenes. I really wish Ridley Scott made an extended version because it could have saved it.

I obtained a physical copy of a shooting script for Only a God Forgives. The ending was extended. A few other things change too. Mainly more violence.
[Show spoiler]the extended end shows chang and Gosling in a cop car in silence driving through the city to the outskirts in an overgrown field noting dogs growling and barking. Exiting the car, and going to the grass gosling kneels and extends his arms. Chang tells him to close his eyes and tell him what he sees. He replies "only darkness" hand scratched through and written "dark emptiness" Chang is to look troubled then gestures for gosling to extend his arms. Both hands are chopped by Chang, then thrown into a field with wild dogs. Gosling is then seen in a hospital with bandaged nubs and Mai is feeding him with a spoon.

I would like to see this ending if it were filmed.
I'd also like to see the extended cut of Event Horizon. It's mentioned the director has it now on a tape. The violence is mentioned but I stI'll hope it gets released even as a bonus. The character D.J. Was my favorite and there is a moment between him and Miller when asked if he believes in hell and he seems spooked/troubled. It's not mentioned what his issue is but it feels like all are there with a "sin". I'd like more in his character if it were available.

What about those deleted scenes that were shown on TV but have never been available anywhere else?

Like the extra ending for John Carpenter's The Thing. I saw it once in the middle of the night on cable and have never been able to find it anywhere - not even on LD. My old copy of the DVD made mention of it, and I think it may have had a still photo, but that was it.

Thank you

I'd love to see the original footage of Smokey and the Bandit Part 3, known as Smokey is the Bandit, with Jackie Gleason occupying both the Bandit and the Smokey roles. Were they two separate characters? Was Buford T. Justice switching sides and occupying the role of the Bandit this time? I've never been able to find any actual verification of how the film was supposed to play out.

I can see why that was cut then.

That Burke scene from Aliens is included in the Alien Anthology set.

Also as far as I know regarding those two scenes from The Exorcist III:

From what I've read here and there the decapitated priest scene I believe was in the original "Legion" cut and the face morphing scene was shot around the same time as the exorcism scene but was subsequently cut from the film because Blatty didn't like the effect or something like that.

I'd completely forgotten this one! Yes, I had heard about it and that infamous scene where a possessed Miller walks on the ceiling. There are other images I have found stills of but are just SO gory and in one of them I don't know what's going on! The film was clearly going to be even darker (about 30 minutes?). We're due a director's cut and I heard they found the footage on a VHS tape in good quality.

There's something I've always wondered...why is it that Batman in Rises seems so physically inferior to Bane? Is it really meant to be a 12 yr absence and bad knees?

The first fight between them just seems to be Batman going for the 'hit as hard as I can" tactic and keep coming forward. I know he was trapped but it wasn't the smartest imo.

There scenes from EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC that have never been seen. I knew the head of publicity in WB NY and was given the reference script they used. Regan's penthouse apartment was build on top of the WB building in Rockefeller Center in NY.
In the script there is a confrontation between Father Lamont and the Demon while under hypnosis. The Demon has imprisoned Father Merrin's soul in a visage of the Coptic church they fought. Lamont frees Merrin's soul and is taken over by Pazuzu. The Coptic church breaks apart (as the house does at the end). Lamont takes Merrin's place and the demon taunts Lamont stating "You have the pride and hubris of a HERETIC!"
This is where the film gets it's title.
Then the demon flies from the ruined church to the house in Washington.
It was a nice special effects sequence.

There's also a scene where is Regan is almost mugged in NYC.

These two scenes are in the script and I have photos of them, the church sequence was briefly seen in the trailer.

There is also a longer confrontation between Lamont and the Cardinal where he puts down the Catholic church for failing that has never been re-inserted back.

I love Richard Burton and Morricone's score, but that movie is a mess imo. However, those scenes you mention and the subplot of Father Merrin's soul sound really interesting and would have elevated the film I think.

Another WB film that's never been seen in its entirety is THE SWARM. The shortest version was the U.S. theatrical edition. However there was an international version that I fought to have put on home video and won. It was released on Laser, and on DVD.
There was a Network TV version that was longer. Yet still there is a longer one that no one has seen.
The train wreck in the film is supposed to end with the camera closing in on the train, going through a window disclosing Oliva Dehavilland covered with bees - this was publicized, and I have a slide of it.
The original press materials, and press Kits mentioned a bee attack on a ranch and showed a picture within the ranch with actor Ben Johnson.

I think it's crazy that the director's cut of Event Horizon was found on a VHS tape that was buried in a salt mine in Transylvania.

Seriously I'm not joking.
