France La Piscine (French Blu-Ray) cancelled???

I ordered the French Blu Ray of "La Piscine" (Swimming Pool) with Alain Delon and Romy Schneider on amazon.fr but it was cancelled.

It is also no longer listed as available, only a very expensive used Blu Ray:

http://www.amazon.fr/piscine-Blu-ray...2860193&sr=1-1

Fnac.com apparently still has it (for 30 Euros) but I would be surprised if they would have it and amazon doesn't...

Does anyone know if this title has been postponed or if even cancelled?

Any info is appreciated since I was looking forward to this film a lot...

Best regards,

Andreas

I am looking forward to this title as well. It was even supposed to be released earlier this year, but got pushed back. This time around Amazon.fr listed it as available for a short time after the release date, but then it sort of fell off the radar just as you've described it.

So i also would be interested to know, if anyone knows what's going on with this title.

Yes, M6 pushed it back. Also, before you commit to the disc I would wait to see how the English version plays (there should not be forced French subs).

I don't want the English version anyway, I want to watch it in French with English (or French) subtitles.

English subs have not been announced so hopefully there are French subs included.

It is Region-Free I won't be able to put up a review for it in the next 10 days as there are more important titles that would go first.

Bought a copy last time i was in France. PQ is very nice on my setup. However i expect the screenshot scientologists to rip this title apart.

Audio is DD only (french or english with forced french subtitles).

Romy and the Maserati are extremely beautiful, so that alone was worth the buy for me.

Could you tell me about the english version? Amazon.fr makes it sound like a special version. Was it actually filmed in english or is it just an english dub?

I haven't watched the complete english version yet, only a short part after watching the french version. I just checked it again, turns out you CAN turn off the french subtitles. No forced french subtitles after all. Sorry for any confusion i might have caused. For some strange reason you can't choose the french sub with the french audio track, which is once again just stupid imo.

Not sure what to make of the two audio tracks. Afaik the engl. audio is an english dub and the film is credited at imdb as having been shot in french. However there are scenes, where it feels like the engl. dub synchs better with the lips than the french track. I guess ProB will shed some light on this in his review.

Good morning:

The English version of La Piscine is indeed that, an English-language version, not a secondary dub. Until not too long ago (to be specific until the Lionsgate Alain Delon boxset in North America was released on DVD) I was under the impression that the film was to be seen in its French-version only (I wrote a review for another site and did some research on it as I had seen this film twice in France, and it was always screened in French). However, apparently Jacques Deray purposely shot an English version of The Pool and if you actually own M6's DVD and watch it you will see that some of the actors speak their lines in English (this should not be surprising as plenty of Romy Schneider's big European films also offer multiple language versions - Zulawski's The Most Important Thing: Love is a great example).

Hope this helps.

Thanks very much for the info. I had no idea a true english version was filmed. I am looking forward to getting the blu-ray and watching both versions.

I received La Piscine today. I'm so excited as it is on of my all time favorite fims. As Pro-B has said, the english version is indeed an entirely english filmed version of the film. It also appears to be a high def transfer for the english version. As also mentioned, it is a region free disc.

I am very pleased with the transfer which at first glance appears very clean. Of note, the aspect ratio is 1.66 which is better IMHO since that respects the original framing. The audio is dolby digital mono.

The French version has no subtitles and the english version has French subtitles only but they can be turned off. I did notice a bit of dialogue in German so without subtitles English speakers will miss a bit but if I recall ( havent seen the film in years) there's not much German.

On a down note, some of the supplements are not in high def despite being on the blu-ray disc. Consequently I can only hear the audio and see a black screen on my Panasonic Blu-Ray player. Must be in PAL. However, oddly on my LG200 I can see the video for the supplements. Supplements are in French only.

PAL Extras. The LG can output a PAL signal and your tv can accept that signal, while the Panasonic cannot output PAL (only the audio).

Yes, the extras are in PAL but you should be able to handle them with the LG. I would try to put up a review on the site soon (I've moved quite a bit of the French titles aside now in order to catch up).

Slightly tangential... but this reminds me that I would looooove to see "Purple Noon" released on Blu-Ray. Now THAT picture would absolutely POP.
