J.J. Abrams Has Monstrous Plans For Third ‘Cloverfield’

I still can’t believe we’re getting some sort of incarnation of a Cloverfield sequel on March 11th.

Coming out of the blue, J.J. Abrams said nothing more than that 10 Cloverfield Lane, starring John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and John Gallagher Jr., is a “blood relative” of the 2010 creature feature that grossed more than $170 million worldwide on a mere $25 million budget (plus marketing).

And while the producer is keeping tight-lipped, he is teasing that there are monstrous plans for a third film that could tie it all together.

“I think that would be presumptuous, because we’re talking about this movie and comparing it to Cloverfield,” Abrams said to EW when asked if it were more like a new “Twilight Zone” episode than having authentic connective tissue. “But I would be lying if I didn’t say there was something else that, if we’re lucky enough to do it, could be really cool that connects some stories.”

Abrams’ only clue is that there is a “larger conceit” at play here. “This is just this movie, and it’s only two films that we’re talking about right now,” Abrams said. “There is something else that we’d like to do, and hopefully we’ll get a shot.”

After the hype started, some reddit users claimed that the Cloverfield connect was pigeon-holed in at the final hour. While this may be true, this doesn’t devalue 10 Cloverfield Lane in an real way. In fact, now I’m even more intrigued to see how J.J. Abrams found a way to fit this into the same universe that could bridge a an even larger third film.

Pretty cool if we get a whole Cloverfield cinematic universe with different types of stories played out.

As glad as I am that we're getting a clover field sequel, id just as easily watch a sit com with MEW and John Goodman in a cellar as well. That could be interesting.

Once again, JJ breaks basic conventions...by having us clamor for a possible sequel to a mysterious blood relative-based film...that hasn't even come out yet.

It's just marketing for the current film. Everyone does it nowadays, show confidence in the current film by talking up a sequel. Also makes it more of a 'must-see' for people to stay in the loop (think MCU). Even Fant4stic did it, and look how that turned out .

The found-footage monster movie Cloverfield didn't just create a new trend in film - it created an entire franchise mythos that has endured nearly a decade, even without a proper sequel.

Fans got a "spiritual sequel" in 2016 with 10 Cloverfield Lane, and a third "Cloverfield Universe" movie, God Particle, is scheduled for February 24, 2017. However, today we learn this is yet another movie with the Cloverfield name coming in 2017, raising new questions about what it could be.

There are no details at this time about what this IMAX movie is, who is involved, or how much of it is in IMAX - but now that the mystery is there, we're sure a viral announcement and PR campaign is sure to follow!

Yep, Paramount is desperate for another franchise. 10 Cloverfield Lane wasn't even that popular of a sequel (selling much fewer tickets than the original) but we're getting two Cloverfield movies next year plus a new one every year?

People here love to harp on Sony for being poorly run but at least they don't take marginally popular movies and run them to the ground with unwarranted sequels.

No, we're getting one. The God Particle film was taken off the schedule and it will likely be released under a new name in October 2017.

10 Cloverfield Lane was loved by audiences and it made Sony some nice cash, I don't see the problem. I guess you're not aware that these aren't direct sequels, it's an anthology series.

I'm starting to think that Paramount is trying to scam movie fans. The only thing they have to do is call it a "Cloverfield" movie and have J.J. Abrams direct and produce it and people will flock to see it just from the implication that it's "connected" to the "Cloverfield" movie.

When a real "Cloverfield" specific movie sequel is announced, I'll go and see it. Either Paramount is very smart or they are assuming that movie fans are too gullible to think otherwise.

Notice how Paramount was vague about Cloverfield Lane and how they're equally as vague about Cloverfield IMAX. They are attaching "Cloverfield" to the movie name and hoping that everyone flocks to the movie theaters.
