Let's imagine you could go through a studio's library and choose HD films that were never released (or out-of-print). Burned to a 25gb BD-R, these "movie only" titles would be without any special features. Cost of the disc in a BD case without artwork would be $20. With artwork, $25. Is this something you would purchase regularly?

BD-Rs will play in most BD players (one exception is the Xbox One). A BD-R is better than nothing if it's the only way a title can be made available. I would expect them to be a bit cheaper than a regular release, however (not $25).

If it's the only release the film is ever going to get, of course. Anyone would be stupid not to, if you really want to own the movie on a physical format.
The future is digital filles, though, so I'd rather just pay for the actual file. Don't need the disc part. |

90% of why i purchase blu rays is because I want to have a piece of phyiscal art to accompany a film. It it has no artwork there's no way in hell I'll ever buy that. I could just download that shit for free.
The same goes for purchasing digital only copies of movies. I will never get into that. |

I don't know about doing it regularly but if they came with artwork, I probably would do it for a handful of titles that weren't likely to ever get a regular release. I bought the DVD on demand version of Under the Rainbow, because that was the only way to get a legit DVD copy even if it wasn't a high quality one.

$25 is a bit too much for a burnt copy of a film for my taste. For that, it is much easier and cheaper (usually) to just buy them as a digital copy, which sometimes does come with extras. Maybe if it was in the $15-$20 range (with the cover) I'll consider it.

Properly Burned BD-R's will play in any Blu-ray player. Having said that I would not purchase on demand titles for the simple reason that they have no resale value. One time I traded in a legitimate MOD title at a flea Market, becaus the movie was finally available on Blu-ray. The owner refused to take the disc even though there was nothing wrong with it!

I used to opposed to buying DVD-Rs and BD-Rs, but I gave in and purchased some classic era film noir movies on DVD-R from Warner Archive and purchased some classic era film noir movies on BD-R from The Film Detective. I have no regrets about any of these, although I obviously wish that they were officially-pressed discs.

No, I wouldn't. In addition to my distrust of burned media in general, recordable media for Blu-ray has the additional disadvantage of not having the scratch-proof coating of replicated BDs.
If you're going to release on physical media, you need to do it right, and for me, as a consumer, that includes the additional security of proper replication. |
