Kadokawa have released the new 4K remaster of Akira's Kurosawa's Ran (1985) in Japan last Friday.

Confirmation:

The Blu-ray Disc in this set is region free.

This release is not English-friendly, as only Japanese subtitles have been provided for the main feature.

The Japanese: DTS 2.0 track is a Japanese-language audio commentary (with Production Managers Teruyo Nogami and Satoru Iseki), which appears to have been recorded in December 2015.

The bulk of the extras on this release, which are about 223 minutes worth according to the packaging, are included on a separate NTSC Region 2 DVD disc. On the Blu-ray Disc, Kadokawa have included three Japanese teasers/trailers, as well as the opening titles and closing credits for the French version of the film. Additionally, there is an option in the supplements menu to view the film with these credits, using seamless branching. For this version, Japanese subtitles have been locked out.

The Japanese makes the best presentation, video bitrate are top notch, packaging design still the best. It's unfortunate very few companies outside Japan go the extra mile. Look at that beautiful artwork and compare that to the Studio Canal version:

Very good design but the Japanese version is excellent

I prefer the SC version. Then again, I have the original US one sheet on my wall, but the blue tones on the poster make the red title really pop (and the font is better on the one-sheet as well).

Does anyone know if this is going to be released on UHD Blu Ray with HDR? I would rather wait on purchasing it in that format instead of a regular Blu...

99% probability of it not. People need to realize 4K discs will be for the top blockbusters and perhaps classic films, and that only a fraction of titles will be coming out on it.

That's unfortunate, since they went through the process of doing a brand new 4k print and everything. I guess I'll stick with my lionsgate standard blu ray of it.

I'm not saying they won't, I'm just saying at this stage of the game it's very unlikely. 4K physical discs will be a niche market. Streaming and downloads are where everything is heading, and is what all the studios want.

And the new disc, color issues aside, is 10x better than the Lionsgate disc.

This is a StudioCanal release as well.
Anywhoo: In every way. Get it.

I am very pleased with the disc, even though it's kind of moody looking. It does fit the gloomy atmosphere of the film.
The audio isn't to die for either, but it's pretty solid. And there are hours of interesting extras.
It's a no-brainer for fans of the film IMHO.
