I don't think they were trying to be, lots of insiders have speculated that Lucasfilm would take advantage of modern Star Wars Day. The rest were expecting April 5th in the US.

Can't believe so many people don't know that May 4th is Star Wars day.

As it is so close to that particular made up 'holiday'* (as opposed to the others, Christmas, Easter etc.) I wouldn't be surprised if it was put back a couple of weeks.

*Yes, I know it isn't holiday. I don't let facts get in the way of my religion bashing

AT LAST! How exciting, i can't wait to watch this at home, although i would have thought they would have tried to release this closer to the easter weekend to capitalise on easter holiday sales.

You can basically blame Thatcher.

http://www.starwars.com/may-the-4th
Quote:
One of the earliest known records of “May the 4th” used in popular culture is in 1979, as described here by author Alan Arnold while he was chronicling the making of The Empire Strikes Back for Lucasfilm:

Friday, May 4

“Margaret Thatcher has won the election and become Britain’s first woman prime minister. To celebrate their victory her party took a half page of advertising space in the London Evening News. This message, referring to the day of victory, was ‘May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations,’ further proof of the extent to which Star Wars has influenced us all.”
(also religion bashing is mean)

Officially confirmed by Disney now. Amazon are doing an exclusive "Dark Side" slipcover. There's no preview, but presumably one of the posters with all the villains on. I imagine either or this or this .

Still no word on a 3D release, so I imagine it's unlikely at this stage unless it's exclusive to a retailer, apparently the 3D edition in the US is exclusive to Walmart so I can imagine HMV or Sainsburys getting an exclusive 3D edition since they usually get the exclusives. Failing that, it looks like we'll have to wait until an unknown date for a 3D edition (perhaps December to tie in with Rogue One?) or import from the US.
