Vudu to Add 1080p HD Movies The set-top service will debut the feature next week.

Since it only takes 4 hours to download the movie in 1080P, the picture quality is not going to be the high bit rate that one gets from 1080P BLU-RAY. VUDU will also not be offering 7.1 DTS-HD master audio or 7.1 PCM yet. Now if sometime in the future one can pay for a download that is 50GB worth of data and a fast download time then the quality would be exactly the same as BLU-RAY. The industry is not there yet. Technically in 5 years or so studios could offer the exact same 50GB BLU-RAY discs for download to a hard drive for video on demand. For now I am sticking with BLU-RAY for the best quality available.

Sweet do these 4 hour downloads come with blu-rays bandwidth and/or lossless audio? No?! Shucks.

With 4 hour download times, the 2 minutes that some have to wait for a disc to load doesn't seem so bad.

I still like buying and collection movies. I don't think I'll bite on downloads anytime soon.

When we do see download services able to meet the pic/sound quality if blu-ray; I will definitely be a very early adopter.

It's so much more convenient when you have friends over for movie watching night to just show them all the movies you have on-screen, complete with desciptions; then to say "hey everyone, all of you go look at those shelves over there and see what you want to watch."

I long ago ripped all of my standard dvd's, and scrolling through them in the Windows Media Center interface made it very easy for company to see what was available for watching.

Unfortunately, I'd have to do a lot of serious PC upgrading before I would be able to do the same with my blu-ray/hd-dvd collection.
