Default Linux for ps3

I've read numerous articles that the ps3 will come with Linux preinstalled on the hard drive, but the interface for the main menu will be like the psp. Correct?

Linux has a lot of different GUI versions...
Sony will probably finetune a kernel for the PS3 for Cell.

This may sound like a silly question, but if you have a ps3, there's no way that you could put the hard drive in a computer right? Or could you do that. The hard drive will be removable. I wonder if it's possible that you could take a ps2 or ps1 memory card and copy the contents to the hard drive and then when you play a ps1 or ps2 game, the console would load up your file from the hard drive instead of from the memory card?

If you get the $600 version, you should be able to have your PS1 and PS2 game saves copied from the memory cards and loaded from the hard drive. This isn't confirmed yet, but it would make sense.

It would make sense to do that. I would think that you would put your memory card into some kind of an attachment that would connect to the ps3 by a USB cable, since there are'nt any slots for a memory card on the console. I would also think that you'll be able to copy files from a memory card onto the hard drive for either version, the only difference would be that you'd be able to store more on the 60GB version.

AFAIK, the $600 version has PS1/PS2 memory card slots.

Two things:

1) What AFAIK mean?

2) If the $600.00 version has slots, where are they? I didn't notice any slots for memory cards on the console, but then again, I havent' seen a clear close up of the back. Can you point them out in a photo?

Just to add a little update, I can't seem to find a crystal clear screenshot of the latest playstation 3 model.

AFAIK means, "as far as I know"...

AFAIK the more expensive PS3 doesn't feature a PS/PS2 memcard slot but a Compact Flash and SD card reader. But I'm sure will see some kind of USB adapter, which allows us to plug the old memcards in...then what use is backward compatibility if you can't even use your old save files?

I agree with your point. Does the 20 GB version feature memory card slots? Quite frankly between the 20GB and the 60GB versions, I didn't notice any differences, but then again, the pictures weren't very clear. What about the USB ports. Last I read, Sony was going to put in six, but that applied to last year. I didn't see any USB ports on the latest model, unless they're in the front. I have seen the controller, but only four lights on the top. I'm wondering if Sony scraped the idea of using seven controllers. Either that, or the controller in the picture is a prototype and we'll see the final version soon. Seven players would work in sports games or in a first person shooter where three players would play in teams of two with the CPU filling in. I would think that preorders for ps3 would be September at the earliest.

Yeah, I agree with you. Either that or they splitted them into 2 channels or something(if its possible).

I think it's quite silly actually, to prefer the 60 GB above the 20 GB version when copying old save games... C'mon, it's a difference of 40 000 000 kB (manufacturers say 1 MB = 1000 kB ) while most save games are less then 500 kB.

HD content would quickly fill the harddrive, that's for sure... However, then still...

The PS3 will have 4 USB ports.

The PS3 Sr will have 60GB HDD versus 20GB in the PS3 Jr.
The PS3 Sr is the only one with memory card readers.
The PS3 Sr has wireless networking.
The PS3 Sr has an HDMI port.

The PS3 still uses Bluetooth, and you'll be able to connect seven Bluetooth devices. I conjecture that if you really wanted to use 7 controllers, Sony might allow it, just doubling up on the lights. (For example, controller 5 would light up lights 1 and 4.) But this is just a guess.

With your last sentence there, I didn't think about that. We'll know more as launch time draws near.

Just to add a little update. I take back what I said about no 7 player support because it didn't dawn on me that there is only so much room on the back of the dual shock controller. You can't put 7 seperate lights on the back as there's no room. So I think that there is one of two possible solutions. 1) Player 5 would be lights 4 and 1, player 6 would be lights 4 and 2 and player 7 would be lights 4 and 3. I think this is how it would work. Any other solutions?

player 0 will be no light at all
player 1 will be light 1,
player 2 will be light 2
player 3 will be light 2 and 1
player 4 will be light 3
player 5 will be light 3 and 1
.....
player 14 will be light 4, 3 and 2
player 15 will be light 4, 3, 2 and 1

there, ps3 will support 16 players

oh, and btw, i'm offended. you totally ignored my posts in this thread, gamekid?

Player 0?

Not a bad idea, but I reckon 4 players is all most games would support at any one time anyway, so I think the 4 lights are for the 4 players.

I wonder if PS3 will be able to print? via blue tooth, wifi or usb? just a random thought; as you'll be able to store your photos on it, and maybe even edit them? So I wonder if you can print them too.
