This movie was good but I gotta say I much prefer the Polanski version of the story. Some of the changes were interesting but overall I think this one was more style over substance. Nothing in it was as good as Finch's Macbeth's line delivery and those realistic fights from the 70's version.

It's on Amazon prime streaming now so I wonder if more people have seen it and which they prefer.

I'm gonna have to check it out as I enjoyed Kurzel's version. Especially Adam Arkapaw and his haunting cinematography.

The reviews on Amazon are interesting... at least they aren't throwing 1 stars up because they couldn't understand the film. The first one has a good point though, the Blu-Ray should have subtitles.

I saw this yesterday and it was ok. Style over substance. Maybe if it had played as a silent film? I mean that as a compliment. I think Cotillard lost weight. You could see her cheeks were sunken - she had an almost chiseled jawline.

Just finished watching the movie, and I really enjoyed it. Great adaptation. Why it didn't get much attention from people is beyond me. Cinematography was on par with The Revenant's. My only real issue was that some of the actors were mumbling quite a bit and it was hard to understand them since I never turned on the subtitles.

I watched it last night.

I love the Macbeth play and I thought this was a pretty good movie, but overall, something was lacking for me. It definitely feels like the emphasis was on style over substance.

Kurzel stays true to the play, but when he deviates, it's quite evident. From what I recall
[Show spoiler]Malcolm does not immediately learn that Macbeth killed his father, Fleance is not saved by the witches, etc.

[Show spoiler]Also the woods are burnt instead of used as camoflauge, the floating sword leading him to stab the king is changed into the ghost boy holding it, and he says his last lines to Macduff like he'd already given up the will to fight. Trying to think of any more changes..

I agree with you 100%. Definitely style over substance, which is OK as I guess I do not mind modern interpretations that still allow audiences to explore this Shakespeare tragedy. I think this version is designed for a more mainstream audience.

Not sure you have Amazon Prime, but Patrick Stewart's version of Macbeth (Natzi-type setting) is streaming for Prime Members and it blew me away, maybe even more than Polanski's take on the story.
