Just saw this one. Wow, truly great film. Does not even have a bluray release. I highly recommend it to anyone.

Been looking to blind buy this. Too bad only a DVD release in the US. Hopefully there will be an international release.

The 6/10 review here on blu-ray.com would beg to differ LOL

“James White” is an endurance test for any filmgoer, tasked with watching irrational characters slowly but completely lose control while experiencing medical and caretaking ordeals. It’s a not a picture that encourages a recommendation...

I've heard nothing but good things about this film, sans that post above me. I've been wanting to see it for so long, but it only played for a week in theaters out here. Hopefully I can catch up with it soon.

A Blu-ray was announced but canceled due to Alchemy's financial troubles.

I have nothing against the film - I haven't seen it and know nothing about it - I had just looked it up after reading the OP which highly recommended it, and was just amused that one of the first sentences in the review said it doesn't encourage recommendation

I thought this film was good. I'm not really praising it but it was a solid 3.5/5 for me.

I agree with the first part of that review. I think it deserves a watch, but I don't see much re-watch value. That shouldn't dictate how good a film is though.

True enough. For example, I think Schindler's List is a superb film, but I have zero interest in ever watching it again.

Christopher Abbott and Cynthia Nixon are amazing in this. Worth seeing for their performances alone.

That review you posted is a bit funny because I think I agree, but the description is not a detriment to the film. The protagonist of the film is a complete douche with next to zero irredeemable qualities. I won't spoil anything about the progression of his character, but when you take a film like Kids, which also features a similar kind of thing, an entire cast of rotten souls, it's still a great film.

Sounds like the movie The Mend from last year, which I hated. Same with Heaven Knows What.

I actually enjoy films where it's lead character is an unlikable *******. We can't all be perfect.

What are some of the best films that come to your mind for characters like this?

Cool, I've only seen about half these. I was trying to think of characters that closely mirrored James White, but none were really fitting the bill. Funnily, the first one that popped to mind was Charlize Theron's character in Young Adult, but that's not a particularly great film.

Kids is my favourite film with an entire cast of scum.

Excellent film- not perfect but extremely well made and some great performances. I especially liked the
[Show spoiler]Paris bathroom scene toward the end of the film.

"What am I supposed to do?"

Just seen it. Very well acted by Christopher Abbott and Cynthia Nixon. The drama is centered around James White (Abbott) who is dealing with the recent loss of his father and the caring for his cancer-suffering mother (Nixon) and especially with his self-destructive behaviour. This sounds very heavy and it is thematically-wise, but fortunately Josh Mond directed a very well crafted spotlight on a clearly defined part of James' life with a glimpse of hope, so it didn't pull me down too much. On first sight the main character is not very likeable, but I think there is more behind the surface and I can relate to him in some kind as well.
Scott Mescudi has a supporting role, did a quite impressing job and I later learned that he is "Kid Cudi" and he also contributed a nice instrumental piece to the soundtrack. Furthermore he's on of the killers in Shia LaBeoufs great short "Maniac" (2011).

8/10

I liked or loved everything that came out of the Campos/Durkin/Mond/Pesce-connection so far: Martha Marcy May Marlene, Simon Killer, Christine, The Eyes of my Mother

One persons opinion doesn't make it a poor film.
