Default Do you think UV will disappear?

I've got about 130 titles in my UV/Vudu collection.
I have a ton of movies in physical form and want to get them converted... But then I wondered if UV will disappear and all of my movies will be gone.

I've tried Googling it and I even called Vudu to ask. Vudu said they have millions of customers and they won't be going anywhere. But I figure that's what they have to say.

What do you fine gents and ladies think? Do you think UV is the future or do you think it'll disappear in a while?

I'd like to think that UV, iTunes, Amazon Video, etc. will last forever, but it's hard for anyone to say definitively. I would think that at least those three would last a long while. Just as that Vudu customer service rep said, they have tons of customers, and I'm sure it keeps growing exponentially. I happen to think that digital is the future, especially if the quality continues to improve to the point that physical media can't keep up. It doesn't always address my every desire (many digital copies are without extra features, when they do exist on DVD and/or Blu-ray), but if it does someday check off every single box (quality, extras, price, etc.), it'll dominate and I suspect it will become the definitive way to watch movies at home.

It's always the big question as you transition from buying physical copies to streaming. At this point I still buy physical copies of something I must have in my collection. I have found there is a ton of stuff I don't have to have a disc for. The reason I don't hesitate as much is the realization streaming will be around for sure in my opinion. Any flat screen tv you purchase now has the steaming apps built in. Consumer's love the idea you can mount tvs instead of buying large tv cabinets you have to set tvs on and the other dvd/Blu-ray player equipment too.

Nah, I believe some streaming service is going to be around for a long time.

I hadn't thought of that Master Gandi. I think you're right.

Thanks for the input Flavacol. I still buy the physical copies for the movies I really like. I hadn't thought of how every smart TV has it. And you're right!

it says in the UV fine print that rights do not expire. I would be more worried about providers going under but that probably won't happen either. Even if the studios rule UV a failing venture, there will probably always be ways to watch our content.

As long as the studios (along with Starz and Funimation) back Ultraviolet, it's here to stay.

I hope not. How else will buying Blu-ray releases with the slip of paper with the code on it fund even more Blu-ray purchases?
Yes, I'm only interested in Ultraviolet so I can sell it. No, I don't have any worthwhile use for them otherwise.

In the UK some studios that have UV in the US/Canada like E1 and Paramount do not have ultraviolet at all and Lionsgate are only on flixster and limited on Sainsbury's entertainment.

Some of the Universal titles that are UV in the US are not in the UK and with flixster video going (cinema now never really existed in the UK and was not that good so does not count). We left with 720p 2 channel providers like blinkbox, Sainsbury and wuaki.

Non of them been interested in improving to 1080p and so far wuaki has not launched 4k which I read was meant to be launched in europe.

UV I see has been doing well in the US and you got someone who does UV 1080/2160p. The only 1080/2160p you get from streaming in the UK is amazon and Netflix and that content library is small compared to the US.

I dont see UV lasting the pace. Digital HD is already showing worrying (if you like digital) signs of slowing growth imo. Sure, Netflix will grow and be around for a long time but EST? I just see it fading away.

Well I read that they want to move their customers over to the new Fandango service later in the year which they are a minority owner but that mostly will be for the US customers since it has not been launched over in the UK unless warner work with universal to launch it outside the US.

Since universal has so far failed to launch their own UV site to be available outside the US I have doubt that Fandango would launch outside the US as well and I do hope warner bros which kept flixster video service running even under a different name for the Rest of the world since I was glad to read that that was not included in the sale to universal.

Time will tell what warner brothers would do.

It was reported by Variety that Flixster Video would shut down but I have been told by two CSR's that that report was incorrect and they will continue to operate their UltraViolet service, sans Disc to Digital. That's good for the rest of the world.
