Default Nintendo To Produce Movies Based On It’s Classic Game Series.

The news, which was first published in Japan’s Asahi Shimbun was translated to (English-language) social media through a series of Tweets by Kyle McLain (via Gamespot):

According to an interview with Kimishima in today's Asahi Shinbun, Nintendo is getting into the movie business, Nintendo is looking at a production system where "we can do as much as we can ourselves." Nintendo isn't interested in producing live-action movies, with Kimishima citing the 1993 Super Mario film as the main reason why the company is leaning toward "anime-type content Kimishima also says that Nintendo would like to have it's first movie ready within the next 2-3 years.

I'd rather they just teamed up with Pixar for a Super Mario Bros film than trying to make one themselves.

How about something like Super Smash Bros. and make it like the Avengers. I'm sure it would make a lot of money and plenty of sequels.

They make some of the best video games around so there is no reason to think they can't do it with movies too. Exciting news!

I think Nintendo characters fighting each other would get a bit repetitive after a while.

Metroid could be an awesome sci fi movie if they don't screw it up.

They had almost no control in the making of that movie. That is why they want to make these themselves to make sure the quality is there.

Castlevania is a Konami IP so that would probably be out. I'm sure this will only be for franchises they own.

I'd rather they find a way to get output similar to Pixar quality but reap all the rewards themselves.

That would be nice, but Nintendo is extremely protective of their properties, wanting to control virtually all aspects. That's the main reason no movies have been made since the mid-'90s; everyone outside the company wants to offer their own take and Nintendo won't play ball.

Agreed, and John Woo actually had the rights in the early 2000s. But they expired when he and Nintendo couldn't agree on the film's direction.

I don't really see what could be done with the Punch-Out series in terms of story, but Castlevania has lots of potential. A film based on the series was stuck in development hell (pardon the pun) for many years, but eventually fizzled out.

You realize those are not Nintendo's property?

Nintendo Owned IPs:

Mario/Super Mario related games, characters. This includes Mario Kart.

Legend of Zelda related games, characters.

F-Zero

Star Fox

Metroid

Kid Icarus

Pokemon

Star Tropics

Earthbound

Fire Emblem

Wars series (ex. Advance Wars)

Golden Sun

Mach Rider

Pilot Wings

Super Smash Brothers (but not licensed characters like Sonic, Solid Snake, Cloud, Ryu, Pac Man etc..)

The Wonderful 101

Donkey Kong/Donkey Kong Country

Punch-Out (all characters save for Mike Tyson)

Kirby and related characters

Wave Race

Excite series (Bike, Truck, Bots)

Pro Wrestling

Animal Crossing

From what I understand Nintendo does not own the rights to preaty much everything that Rare created for them back in the N64 era (Killer Instinct, Conker, Banjo-Kazooie, etc.).
