Default It is not just Planet Earth on Amazon

http://www.amazon.com/o/ASIN/B000PML...pf_rd_i=507846 Seem like other people are getting confused about the format, but of course this reviewer didn't realize that they could actually play the DVD side. And yes, the movie itself did deserve a one star rating anyway. I am guessing they hope people will buy the HD DVD version since it doesn't actually include the disclaimer that it won't play on your DVD player. It should at least say if you want to play the the HD content you need an HD DVD player.

And if you look at the Planet Earth HD DVD on Amazon, there are even more bad reviews about not being able to play it and not knowing that you needed an HD DVD player. It's sad really.

I have yet to see any notices saying, "This will only play with a HD-DVD player." Most of the Blu-Ray have the notice, "Only play with a Blu-Ray player."

Poor people probably only see DVD so they order it anyway!

Most people assume DVD is HD. Even many HDTV owners have very little concept of SD, ED, HD in regards to the source. And many of those that do know the difference assume that a scaling player will still handle it. I think consumer confusion is the primary reason Universal and Warner do combo encodings for new releases and why Weinstein doesn't support HD DVD day and date with DVD.

It's funny, but in the beginning (prior to launch and the final studio line-ups) I thought HD-DVD might catch on because of the name recognition. In hindsight, the BDA made a good move by calling their tech something completely different. It appears consumers clearly understand that Blu-Ray will not work in existing DVD drives, while the same can't be said for HD-DVD.
