Default Fanny (1961)

https://www.shoutfactory.com/film/film-drama/fanny

Quote:
Synopsis

The effervescent Leslie Caron (Gigi) stars in Fanny, a timeless tale of romance and the recipient of five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.

In early 1920s Marseille, young Marius (Horst Buchholz) dreams of leaving his dull provincial life and seeing the world. But when the beautiful Fanny (Caron) declares her adoration for him, Marius must choose between an adventurous life at sea and the grandest adventure of all – love.

Directed by stage and screen legend Joshua Logan and featuring Maurice Chevalier (Love in the Afternoon) and Charles Boyer (Gaslight), Fanny is a Technicolor classic, filled with style, beauty, and heart

Nice! I somehow missed this announcement and just saw it in the coming soon section on Shout's website. Another DVD to the trade pile!

Default A Question

I have never bought a Shout Factory Blu-ray Disc. Does this company make decent product?

Shout released the original 1968 film "The Producers" and it looks very good

Got mine as well, but probably won't have a chance to check it out for a couple of days. Will post my thoughts if no one gets to it in the meantime.

So does anyone who's picked this up and watched it have any comments on the quality of Shout! Factory's handling of it?

I'm not finding very many reviews of this title on Blu-ray at all! This one really rips the PQ, rating it 2/5: http://nixpixdvdmoviereviewsandmore....961-shout.html

To those who have this, do you agree?

I've seen some informal customer reviews that indicate the German release might look pretty good. Has anyone seen that?

The film is not in the public domain, what a bizarre claim

That is an odd thing to mention in their review...

Well, I went ahead, took the plunge, and ordered the Shout! Factory release of this. I'll make sure to post my thoughts on it after it arrives and my wife and I have had a chance to view it.

The disc looks okay, but not up to Warner Archive standards. The color is good but there are white specks throughout

Thanks, Musicguy; good to know. I'm glad to hear that the color is good. White specks actually don't bother me in this case--I understand that this isn't a film where a full restoration could be financially justified. As long as they've remained faithful to the original film elements--and not overly digitally processed the look--then I'll be happy.

I received my copy today, and while I haven't watched the whole thing yet, I popped it in and forwarded through all the chapters. It looks fine enough! I think the reviewer mentioned above had some unrealistic expectations. No, this will never be mistaken for a Blu-ray demonstration disc. The print utilized obviously shows its age. But this isn't the worst Blu-ray I've ever seen, not by a long shot. Some parts of it actually look pretty good. Thankfully, it doesn't appear that any aggressive technical tomfoolery has been applied. The mastering seems pretty faithful to the source. All in all, a perfectly watchable experience. My biggest disappointment is that there are no extras outside of a stills gallery. That's it! Pretty bare bones.
