Still need to watch this one. And Blade II. Really need to get around to seeing those two to complete my Del Toro viewings. Cronos is still my favorite.

This is probably his best for me, or at least tied with The Devil's Backbone.

Yeah, those two are almost universally considered his best. Pan's Labyrinth was a serious contender for Oscars at the time. I think Pan's Labyrinth is greatly superior due to how heartbreaking it is and how stunning the visuals are, while Devil's Backbone is much more muted both emotionally and visually, but they're both genre classics. I'm overjoyed that now we'll have a version of Pan's Labyrinth to stand alongside CC's Devil's Backbone.

The re-released special edition in the UK back in 2011 came with lossless audio and the same great non DNR'rd picture quality: www.blu-ray.com/movies/Pans-Labyrinth-Blu-ray/18496/.

Del Toro tweeted a few days ago that something special was coming to celebrate its 10th anniversary, so I figured a Criterion release was happening

I just imported the UK release a month ago! Should have known it'd get a CC release; it'll surely be a major upgrade to the New Line Blu-ray.

Hope that all of the extras from the previous release will be retained. Can't wait to see the cover art!

Please do not frak it up Criterion!!!
No extra beyond teal grading from the original and do not apply any sharpening.

This must belong in my collection.

Since when did those films become an official 'trilogy'? I recall Del Toro saying years ago that the trilogy he wanted to make still needed another installment.

Cronos has nothing to do with Devil's Backbone or Pan's Labyrinth. Those two films are tied by war.

There is nothing connecting the films except the director. That's like saying the terminator, aliens and avatar make a trilogy because James Cameron directed them all and they are all sci-fi. Even if Cameron came out and said they were a trilogy it wouldn't make it true IMO

As for a criterion pans labyrinth.... Bring it on baby. One of the all time greats, I know some aren't too crazy about it but I feel its Del Toro's masterpiece and worthy of a double dip

GDT calls it his Spanish language trilogy...

See:

“You know we definitely have had that conversation with Criterion. They found a really good response to Devil’s Advocate and Cronos. It’s all in the hands of them being able to strike a deal with New Line and Warners for the film, but I would love nothing more than having that. That would complete the Spanish-language trilogy so far (laughs).”

^^i get that but he is backpeddling. He used to say that he wanted to make the 3rd installment to the Spanish trilogy that has the effects of war on children as the primary theme.

He is too much of a 'Hollywood man' now to return to that 'trilogy' I suspect so he now includes Cronos as part of the trilogy when it has nothing to do with his original intentions.

Shame.

Del Toro's Spanish language films are on a higher level. I wish he would do another one soon.

Re: Pan's Labyrinth, I've been delaying watching it until recently, thinking it's a kid's movie (), but, boy, was I wrong. Or you can say it's a kid's movie, but a rather grim one. Powerful movie.

So if Cronos, Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth are the Spanish language trilogy, do you guys think that Criterion will do a special trilogy box set, like they did with with the Whit Stillman films and the Andre Gregory/Wallace Shawn box set?
