Default Why Does Iron Man Have Black Bars At Top/Bottom?

Hello all... I have a Sony Bravia XBR 1080p 120hz LCD. TV shows, X-Box 360 and PS3 all fill-up the entire screen.

When I play movies like Iron Man, why are there black bars at the top/bottom.

Is it because for the theater, the aspect ratio is different from TVs?

It does not bother me, but my babysitter and her hubby has a larger Sony LCD 1080p and it bugs him.

He wants to know why Blu-Ray does not fill up the whole screen.

Is it all aspect ratio? Is it because some directors want more on the screen so change it for theaters?

He hates zooming in because it just looks "off" - Any answers for the Blu-Ray, 1080p, LCD wide-screen TV guru's?

Its aspect ratio. If you take that away, its stretches the picture and you lose AQ. there are alot of threads you can search for that can give you a better explanation...

Anyone have a link to some threads?

I would love to explain to him that movies theaters are blank x blank and our Sony TV's are 1080p but are blank x blank... so they have to reduce the size of theater to match TV and not lose quality.

It's the financial crisis. They can no longer afford to fill your entire screen...
