Where can I figure out how to do this? Is there a guide somewhere on how to do it?

Most likely going with the Sony BDP S5500. Going for $80 on Amazon, $180 on 220 electronics for region free, which is quite a bit more.

I use our X1 for 3D movies and it looks fine to my eyes. We have a standalone sony BR player that I use for 2D and it looks amazing. I actually haven't tried a 2D on our xbox yet, maybe I'll do that.

I'm curious how PS4 fairs for BD playback compared to PS3. Any difference in features/options/load times/general? I haven't felt the need to mess with PS4 much. I loved the fat PS3s, but I hate the slims.

The PS4 is very troublesome to navigate. Even with the Blu-ray remote, the ease of use is definitely not as good as the PS3.

Of course, it doesn't have problems playing 3D with Dolby TrueHD.

I'm having a weird problem with PS3 audio lately, no sound in games and movies but PS3 menu has sound.

Under HDMI out, I had Dolby 5.1 and DTS selected (which used to work just fine, now nothing).

In order to get sound in games and movies, I had to do HDMI Auto which just gives you only PCM 2.0 channel.

Not sure what happened, I have an LG TV running optical out to an LG soundbar and there were no issues previously.

Of course, there are always updates for TVs, soundbars, and consoles so I have no idea what went wrong specifically.

I'm no sound expert, but setting the PS3 to PCM only sounds like a bad idea....

UPDATE: Did the 'hold the power button till two beeps' thing to reset PS3 A/V settings.

After setup, everything worked. Surround sound is back.

I was planning on using my Region A PS4 for any discs locked to region A (My Blu ray player is Region B) but I gave up when it wants to always connect to the internet prior to playing a disc. I'd rather just purchase a dedicated Blu Ray player.

From what I gather the Ps3 is a whole lot better with playing Blu rays.

Definitely.
The PlayStation 3 with the official remote is a breeze to use.

As far as the OP's disc problems, I'm not convinced they are "player-related". Before buying a new Blu-ray player to try to "fix" the problems, I'd try the discs on a friend/family/etc.'s player just to make sure the problems aren't with the discs themselves.
When blu-ray came out I went with the PS3 and it never had any problems with disks and got a firmware update to the latest profiles where as I know a lot of profile 1.0 players you had to upgrade to get the next profile. It was the best decision I made.

I remember that some disks did have issues with certain players and had to have firmware updates and at one point I believe it was one of the transformers disks that some had to have replaced cause the players could not play the disk (can't remember the specifics) but the PS3 just played it without issue.

The only part of the PS3 that bugs me is 3D disks with Dolby TrueHD, They never added Dolby Lossless support to 3D. It does not matter to much since I got a 4k player now but the PS3 lasted me a while and no issues at all.
