Default Inexpensive Reciever

Hey All,

I know this topic has been beaten like a dead horse But I am lazy and didn't want to search the forums (plus I am at work)

I am looking for a new receiever that will extract audio out of HDMI. I only have 5 speakers so I don't need a 7.1 system, thats later. And I am not looking at spending alot of money.

Any help at all is greatly appreciated.

I am using a PS3 for my Blu/Dvd player and I am getting Directv HD-DVR box for television.

And budget, I really don't want to spend more then $300 but max is $400

Well in my opinion the best bang for the buck is the Onkyo 606. It will decode all your HD soundtracks, provide 90 watts per channel, has 4 HDMI inputs, and has HDMI upscaling.

The 606 is a great choice for a receiver under $400.

Onkyo 606. It was what the majority here recommended to me back a couple of months ago when I made my upgrade. I'm loving it so I now highly recommend it as well.

You don't need a receiver that will decode the audio, just get one that accepts the PCM...... you can get an older model of a better receiver this way, and have a better receiver (for your needs) for the money.......

My recommendation is a Marantz SR 4001 for only $250 ..... I'd audition one if you can, but if you can't, it's only my opinion that the audio quality far exceeds that of any onkyo I've heard (including the 900's) and any sony, Yamaha, etc.... Anything else (Nad, Denon, etc) will set you back too much money for better AQ.

Check around, if you don't want to audition anything, any Yamaha, Sony, or Onkyo will get the job done..... especially if you're not overly sensitive to variations in sound quality

I have had a LOT of different AVRs, and currently run an SR 5001 in the bedroom, and an SR 7001 in my living room (which will be moved to my new theater)

What speakers are you using???? if you're just using something from an older HTIB etc, I'd say just get the cheapest model receiver that can accept PCM
