How much of the capability of the PS/3 is being left unexploited, and how do the games match up right now? If the PS/3 is reasonably close now, it means it could be well ahead later in the life cycle.
That is possible, but I again point you to Sony's constant overexaggerations as to their CPU power, by exponential amounts. I don't think even the PS3 could render the FF8 ballroom in real time exactly as seen in FF8.

And I've been playing PlayStation since my friend imported a PS1 a year before the US launch.

If it wasn't for the people from this site I wouldn't play online very much. It's more adult oriented or at least sensible people oriented where you don't get some kid screaming obscenities in the Mic. And it's just for fun. If you aren't very good at a game, no big deal.

Look at ps2 games when it came out and what they look like today, there is alot of room left in what the cell can do. Don't forget that ff8 was a 480i game on the psone, it was probably 30fps if they were lucky, I am pretty sure it could render the ball room scene, the computers of that time were alot slower then they are today, a cell processor like the PS3 has would be a programmer's dream back then.

If the Cell wasn't extremely powerful, IBM would not be showing it off at trade shows using real-time demos. They would probably be demonstrating the Xbox 360 PPC processors.

Plus, did you see the video about the PS3 doing real-time ray tracing only really using 4 SPEs per PS3 (three PS3s) and no graphics cards?

Thanx, you kinda backed me up. I said the future. Story Co-op games will be better then a single player story game. Just Imagine GTA with Co-op. Or Resi Evil Co-op. Actually Resi Evil is more of a single player game. Is more scary on your own lol. Still, co-op would be cool.

FFXIII in last years E3 battle trailer already looks better than the FFVIII ballroom dance (both the FFVIII FMV and PS2 tech demo versions).

And if you can find a clear enough video of the PS2 tech demo, it's really not as impressive as you may remember it being.

Thanks for that link, aaronwt. It's tough finding a good crowd to play with these days, on any platform.

It's pretty cool that you work at Square Enix. I can't wait to see the E3 coverage of this!

It's actual sell-through isn't 10 million. Shipments were 10.4 about 6 months ago, but as I understand it actual sell through at the time was closer to 6.5. Not sure about today. And I know that they count repairs as additional shipments, possibly as additional sales. Not sure what the real world ratio is, but I'd put it at about 2.3:1.

Yes, the installed base of the PS3 is lower than the 360
First off I am not a 360 fanboy. I want the ps3 to punish that crappy white hunk of plastic.

My brother and I have discussed this several times and unfortunately I doubt the dev's are going to change.
The first problem is why would they try and make a game for the ps3 first? If they go huge like 20gb for the game think how hard that would be to cut down for the 360. They could go multiple disc but why would they want to decrease there profit margin by ioncreasing production cost?

I fear that sony's only hope is Insomniac and Naughty Dog. God of War 3 is to far off on the horizon. We need industry changing WOW factor to change things.

I agree about the online play not maturing but you can always kick the idiots out of your game. Thats what I do with RB6 on the 360 and have found a good group of 20-54 year olds that play yeah that last one isn't a typo.

There is 2 things that sony needs on every title:
1. solid online mutiplayer like resistance
2. solid story mode with online co-op. only thing missing from resistance IMHO

That's a gross mis-representation. While PS3s dev kits are far from horrible, they are much better than PS2s. They are just as good as 360s

I remember when they DID render the ballroom scene from FF8 in real time. It happened. There are screenshots of it.

The problem was that gamers expected every game to look as spectacular as the demos Sony used to showcase the hardware, including a real-time demonstration of Final Fantasy VIII's ballroom scene and a facial-animation sequence that looked on par with anything Hollywood had ever produced.

Final Fantasy VIII CG - One of the most stunning demos shown was Square's real-time rendering on the ballroom scene from Final Fantasy VIII. The sequence appeared just as it did in the game, with no visible polygons or slowdown.

That would make you an extremely horrible guess at how powerful even last gen technology is, let alone next gen

And they admitted they got Killzone confused with Resistance when they said it was real time, then admitted the killzone footage was done using in-game assets.

And as someone else pointed out, IBM is also touting Cell's amazing power. And they made 360s CPU too. Cell has those different cores for a reason, they handle certain types of tasks far better thana generic core. Like physics, audio and video.

You're on a roll with those mis-representations. Actually developers have said it's easier to go from PS3 to 360, rather than vice versa.

But Mr Julian.E can't possibly be telling the truth when he's only made Nintendo and Sony console games recently!
