Default Simple Home Theater Set Up

Alright so i'm a college student and am trying to set up my system to completely make everything look and sound amazing.

Things i have: Sony PS3, Logitech Z-5500, Samsung LN46A650.
High end cables: 1 Sony HDMI cable, and 1 Sony Optical Cable.

Simply wondering should i go with the hdmi cable to the tv and then optical from the tv to the Logitech...
or take the optical cable from the PS3 to the Logitech with the hdmi (video only) to the tv?

how should i transfer sound from the tv to the Logitech if i only have one optical in port on the Logitech if i do it the second way, for tv in surround?

PS3->HDMI->HDTV.
PS3->Optical->Z-5500.

As far as audio for HDTV, are you getting a HD signal for your regular TV programs? If you are, then you need a optical-to-coaxial converter.
You can get the above here at Monoprice. Connect another optical cable - which you can also buy at Monoprice for just US$1.50 - to this converter and connect a regular RCA cable to your Z-5500. So optical is for PS3 and coaxial is for HDTV.

Two things: 1) Sony cables are not high-end. 2) If it's a digital signal you're connecting, a US$2 cable would do so long as you don't lose the signal.
