Default Home Theater room remodel project

OK guys need some opinions. I'm going to be remodeling our theater room and I think I've decided to put tile down instead of carpet. I know tile isn't the ideal theater room flooring but I will be getting an area rug and will most likely go with some acoustic treatments of some sort.

I also plan on lowering the center channel and placing it right below the TV, since it sits too far back and a little too high.

Here is the current picture of how the front of the room looks.

The second picture being the tiles I have picked out to possibly put in the room.

I would love to have any opinions on these tiles, colors of wall panels, and any other thoughts or additions I might make while starting this process.

Thanks!

i like the grey tiles

i'd recommend moving that table out of the way of your R front

The middle tile for sure. It sets a different contrast from the wall color.

Where is the Left Front? It seems too far from the TV when compared to the Right front. The center shelf looks a bit odd to me. I don't really like the look, but that's just my preference.

it appears that your furniture is mostly wood. If you go with the darker tile i think it will be to dark and look bad with dark wood furniture. I think the third one would not match with anything either. I think the first one looks really nice and classy and would go with your furniture better then the other ones.

The room has some strange dimensions. It's a long and skinny room. I can get more pictures but to describe it I have a leather full sofa and love seat. The room is about 24 x 12 or so. It makes for a narrow room with both couches but I need them so I can sit more than just 3 people.

The left speaker (which is out of the pic) is about the same distance from the TV it is just a weird angle that I shot the photo.

I have the room running long ways as you can see.....would it be better to turn it the other way? I wouldn't think so but that's just me.

I have a room of similar size and shape, probably 30' X 15' I set it up wide ways and got a Coaster Promenade sectional. Only seats four, but there's not a bad viewing spot on it.

From what I understand, the wall where your TV is is 12' wide? It's best to keep it that way. Also I you can, you could put a separation to have a lenght around 19'5". This way your room dimensions would respect the golden ratio which are known to be the best for room acoustics.

Check the distance between your display to your main viewing position. Ideally you should keep to a certain distance (depending on your display size) to resolve all the details. Look at this thread for information on viewing distances. If you can fit the other couch and keep a proper viewing distance, great.

I like the tile on the left. Remember you can always change furniture and wall color. The left tile has a more neutral tone that would go good with the dark furniture but not make it too dark.

Wifey liked the middle gray one.

Out of those three tile samples i say either far left or middle. My wife says middle. The darker tile will be easiest to maintain. Good luck

OK after driving myself crazy we have decided to go with the darker tile. We are also going to be purchasing an area rug for the space between the TV and the sofa.

I am planning on getting around 6 ATS Acoustic Panels and an Auralex Subdude for treatment for the room.

The only other problem I'm running into is trying to arrange my speakers and place electronics in the right places.

I've attached a picture of the layout of the theater room, built with my killer MS Paint skills.

I'd love any suggestions on arrangement of the room, speakers, my ideas for acoustic treatment, etc.

Thanks for the suggestions so far!!!

Another question, currently I have a 5.1 surround running off of a Onkyo 605.

I'd like to add 2 more speakers for 7.1 but I'd have to mount them near the top of the ceiling 4-5 feet above my head. Currently my two rears are up that high in the back of the room and I can hear them just fine (even though it's not the ideal placement).

Should I not add the two speakers if I'm mounting that high or should I go for it???

You might consider switching placement of the front L/R speakers with the sub and AV Rack. You may get better response with the sub in the corner.

Another option is in-ceiling speakers for your last two speakers to complete a 7.1 system. In-ceiling speakers are the only way I will be able to get a 7.1 system on my HT. Also, when you add the last two speakers, you will not want your back speakers to be in the corners of the room. They will need to be moved inward along the back wall.

-I will be moving all the equipment (receiver, ps3, etc.) to the shelves below the TV.
-I'm also going to do like you said and bring the L and R fronts in a few inches and center everything better.
-I'm also bring my surrounds down and will configure them the way that DTS/THX setup is (slightly above ear level).

I ordered my ATS Acoustic Panels and two new Klipsch surrounds to complete 7.1.

Now all that is left is doing all the work for the floors and rearranging the room.

I'm getting excited, hopefully all goes well.....and I'll provide some pics with the finished product!

Yeah, but trust me the room is awkward and I think I've gotten to the best setup I can with the sofa and love seat.

It's just narrow and I can't think of any other way of moving them around. Another reason is I have doors that lead to my garage that give me problems.

Overall, as it is right now I think it gives an overall good view for all (generally speaking).

Another question for anyone out there.

I'm kind of an idiot and purchased Klipsch SS.5 to complete my 7.1 surround. It was a great price at $99 w/ free shipping for the pair.

I purchased them thinking that my current pair of surrounds were SS.5. Of course they aren't they are actually the reference series RS 10's.

They are about the same size and look, the only difference I can really see is the Peak Watts.

Question is will I notice a huge difference or should I just be happy with the deal I got and keep what I'm getting.

I'd put the first and second tile down in some kind of pattern. Maybe the 1st in a 24x24 size and the second in a 12x12 size?

Let me know how it sounds when you're done as I'm thinking of going with acid stained concrete when I get my basement done (hate carpet) and am curious as to how well a throw rug helps in what would otherwise be an echo-y room.

I've wondered about purchasing some Klipsch speakers. Do you like them besides this?
