So the team for Lords of Fallen, Deck 13, is working on a new game, with robots set in a future world.

Yeah, like Lords of the Fallen, it looks okay...just much too slow, especially for my style of play. In Dark Souls 3, I tend to equip the lightest armor possible.

Graphics look cool for a post apocalyptic future theme, nice 3rd person view and the battles could be a challenge. Will keep this on my radar.
They mention the levels are Metroid-vanian in nature, where you find new sections later on after unlocking them. |

I like the concept and the battles look challenging, though I really was hoping to see more open spaces in addition to these more linear, hallway like areas which force one vs one battles. Something out in a wide open forest or field would give you more freedom of movement and choice till you hit the interiors.

I picked this up out of curiosity. It's okay. As expected, it's a Souls inspired combat game with the feel of its predecessor Lords of the Fallen. Don't expect tight strafing locked-on combat like Souls or near invincible dodge-rolls. It's a lot looser is how I would describe it. If you die, you have 2.5 minutes to reclaim your scraps (currency) before they disappear. Kills on the way extend your time. There is some linearity, but probably no more than Souls or Bloodborne, as there are multiple intersecting pathways, especially once you open the shortcuts.
Some issues are inability to lock onto some enemies behind railings or at different elevations or locking onto enemies in the next room. The unique feature is the ability to lock onto limbs in an attempt to dismember parts you need for crafting and upgrades. And it requires you to pace your damage such that the enemy does not die and the limb is not destroyed before you build your energy meter such that you can perform a finishing move. You might need to choose a lighter weapon or equip implants that allow you to build energy faster. Unfortunately, you are vulnerable while initiating a finishing move. I have cleared the first boss at this point. Standard fare. As with Lords of the Fallen, there are hardcore methods for boss kills that grant enhanced boss weapons. I got tired of trying this for the first boss, though it's not really so hard. Beating him normally was very easy. I'm a little frustrated at this point, as I have yet to enter an area where I can find materials to level my gear from II to III, so it's a little stagnant. On the Pro, you can choose between framerate and resolution. |

Kinda got pissed off today and quit to go back to Nier for a while. The dodge mechanic is simply completely ineffective, and with most of the encounters thus far in narrow passages, stairs or catwalks, it's just too unreliable of a system. And I'm still making my way around the second area where nothing at all gets dropped that can help you upgrade your gear. I actually don't think I have the patience for these types of games anymore. I don't enjoy losing two hours of progress because some guy is crouched behind a crate.

I couldn't make it past the first major (second or third overall) boss no matter how hard I tried. It took SOOO long to do any form of attack. He just kept spawning in other enemies, and I couldn't kill him. I got him nearly dead and that took like twenty minutes. It was boring as shit because the boss wasn't even hard, you just hit like you were using a branch and each action took way to long to do.

I don't mind a challenge, as long as I can see the boss' health is dwindling away with each hit, so its end is getting closer. Of course if the game's difficulty is too high, that can definitely make me think twice about continuing. In those cases, to save time, I'll set it to an easier difficulty to make the game more enjoyable. Though not all games have a difficulty option.

Finally found the second boss room and got owned in one attempt. It's a short hop with the shortcuts open. It's too hard for me, this game. It's missing something that I need to get better.
I started Nioh, too, and in comparison, the combat is much more souls-like. And I think what The Surge is lacking is the ability to "feel" when you're in trouble. There is nothing tactile about taking damage or running out of steam. That and the dodge/evade is just ineffective in my hands. I can watch videos and it looks easy, but isn't that always the case. |
