Question Have you been holding out on buying regular Blu-rays for 4K UHD releases?

I have.

Ever since I had decided I was going 4K, I haven't bought a 1080p Blu-ray with the exception of 3D movies and old cultfilms.

13 Hours, Straight Outta Compton, 10 Cloverfield Lane and London Has Fallen for example are movies I would really love to own but I cannot justify buying these, knowing that a UHD release is imminent.

Everything is already expensive as it is.

You must have nerves of steel.

I've notice that new release BDs go on sale for $10 in 1-2 months at Target.

Even if I was hoping to delay, getting a slip cover for $10 is too good to pass up.

Yep, when it comes to new releases, or... In the case of Sony, "Mastered in 4K" releases.

Still buying catalog and anime on BD, since some of that will never show up in 4K.

If a new release doesn't show up simultaneously with 4K I wouldn't count on it being released on 4K. I guess some could be released later on but I bet most of those titles won't be released on the format (at least anytime soon). Catalog titles that aren't big enough will also remain Blu-ray releases only.

Except Disney as they haven't jumped on 4K releases at all yet. Some of those might be rereleased sooner rather than later.

Yep. If it at all looks like it could conceivably be a UHD candidate, I'm not buying it unless and until that UHD comes out.

*Take note, Disney.*

I have been buying Disney films, but other than that, I have been sticking to the UHD version when I buy it.

No. I'll admit that I've been impressed with 4k demos in stores, though it's nowhere near the "wow factor" of seeing blu/hd dvd for the first time in 2006. Price is still a bit steep for my liking and I don't have a player, 4k tv, or Atmos setup yet. Aside from that, there are very few movies out right now that I would pay a premium for the full bell and whistle experience. I'm sure if a slew of catalog favorites are released for $10-15 then that will change, though.

Certain titles, yes. Some of it hinges on Disney's decision on when they will support the format and whether they will include Atmos tracks.

Yep. I passed on:

Crimson Peak
Spectre
Hateful 8
13 Hours
Nice Guys
10 Cloverfield Lane

And I will be passing on Conjuring 2 and Civil War. I did have to cave in and get Force Awakens. #NotStrongEnough

Titles that came out last year that I wanted, I had picked up at the time. This year I started holding out.

I very much want to buy The Nice Guys today. Seeing that Warner released this in UHD on Vudu is a sign that the UBD will definitely come eventually. So I will wait. It's just frustrating that they have not released it day and date with the BD.

I'm holding out on Hateful Eight and Civil War, as well, but I went standard Blu on Force Awakens because it's a 2K DCP.

Oh well... Saves me money then. There's been a small batch I've held off on that I wanted outside of Keanu and Nice Guys.

10 Cloverfield Lane
13 Hours
All Sony "Mastered in 4K titles," outside of the Ghostbusters Pack... At least I won't have to wait 11 years to get Bad Boys II on this format.

If I want it now then I buy it now, most new BD releases are hardly breaking the bank (£7 for remastered ID4 is insane, I then sold the UV code for £3) and many of my most recent purchases have been 3 for £20 or 5 for £30 deals. If a UHD of x title is announced then I'll just sell the Blu-ray on amazon.

Not at all for me. I'm with Geoff on this one. If I want it, I buy it.

Blu-ray releases still look great on a large HDTV, so I'm not particularly concerned with waiting. Besides, I don't have a 4K HDTV just yet and when I get one...I want a nice one. So, looking at that investment, I want to wait until a high end 65" 4K price is reasonable, so the best of both worlds is 4K titles will be more available in a few years, not to mention prices on today's titles will be less expensive and I'll pick them up on Black Friday deals.

Which is another option for avid movie collectors. If stores are smart enough to have BF deals on 4K titles, I probably will bite if the deals are something you would not see normally.

Another thing is I'm more into special edition releases, and 4K hasn't even tried this market yet, unless I'm mistaken. I just forked out $50 or so for another Arrow collection and I like the personal touch.

A 4K title slapped in a smokey case with a $25 pricetag...just isn't making me cream my shorts.

Nope! Not at all! If I want something I want it when I can get it! Zero interest in 4k ultra hd blurays will continue getting regular blurays and dvds....

I'm waiting for most new releases now, but there have been some blus that I just haven't gotten around to getting yet that I might as well wait for in UHD, such as LotR and Star Wars. They will inevitably show up, and I think I'll just wait for them.

I look into any thing I'm looking to see if it has a 4k release any time soon. I'll try and hold out as long as possible lol.
