Default From G4: Microsoft will now have...

... a three year warranty and free repairs w/ shipping for xbox 360s.

Even though I hate HD-DVD, I do like Microsoft and the xbox360 to a certain extent, mainly because of GOW. Should I now repurchase after my first and only ring of death a seven months ago?

It's a good move on MS's part, extend the warranty to match their expected lifespan on the console. It's a good move to help counter the buzz on part of the overworked european repair centers.

However, this is going to increase the cost per unit on each box, and reduce margins for their retail partners [you're less likly to buy that Point of Purchase warranty programs if the console has a 3 year warranty bundled]. My expectation of a price drop this winter has been lowered, unforunately.

How long before they start offering a live-in M$ technician?

I really like my 360 and play it regularly. Still on my first one which I bought at launch, so I've had no problems at all. I actually put my player into my main theater now so I can use it on my 70" XBR2. I had to take that unused HD DVD player out of rotation though...

I'll guess it wasn't voluntary..a recall was in the wind and this was the only solution to avoid that...since a total recall would have sunk their xbox business. Despite this potentially costing a Billion or Two - it's cheap compared to the alternative. Personally I just don't want the hassle and time wasted dealing with support etc. Potentially multiple times.

It was this or class action. There was more than enough evidence for a defective design lawsuit.

This way they don't have to pay off with all kinds of coupons for all the broken systems enforced by a judge, and save themselves millions in legal bills to boot
