The people behind the film say it's a sequel so what else can it be?

I voted remake/reboot, but I accept that these categories don't always have strict, uncrossable delineations. A film can sometimes be Venn diagrammed as a combination of both sequel and remake/reboot. I think Evil Dead 2, Jurassic World and The Thing (albeit prequel rather than sequel) are all excellent examples of this. Just like how Alien can be both science fiction and horror.

If the guys who made it say it's a prequel or sequel, it's nothing else.

Appreciate the Shawshank option. My other half was actually watching the film when I discovered this thread. It was meant to be.

Anyway, I naturally think of Evil Dead as a remake first and foremost (after all, it pretty much tells the same story and recreates the infamous tree rape) but there's definite clues that suggest that it takes place years after the events of the original. Maybe the implication is that history's repeating itself or something? I dunno, it's been a while since I've seen it.

As good as the film is, Raimi's original is 5ever the best.

I don't get the voting on this one. People rather vote for what it feels like in their own head than for what it actually officially is, ignoring all the signs that confirm the last part? Nuts.

It's a little bit of both. It doesn't have the same characters, it has loose equivalents for them and then it plays on the audiences expectation if they have seen the original and it subverts them. But I think it's one of these films which tell a newish story in the same universe so more of a sequel.

I never understood the claim that Evil Dead 2 is a remake of the first film. The first five minute reshot recap is a mini-remake but most of the film is clearly a sequel which moves the plot on and introduces a new set of characters.

it's a remake/reboot. I don't care what the director suggests...I've seen the movie and it is what it is....

People probably already know my stance on this which happens to be the same as the guy who you know....made the movie. Someone's personal feeling on that it "feels" like to them is completely irrelevant. I can feel like the sky is purple it doesn't mean it is purple.

yea, but if the director says its a sequel, only to justify future endeavors he wants to do, how can you take him at his word that it was always intended to be a sequel?

im not buying it.... its a remake
