It's coming out this Friday and it doesn't have its own thread yet, so here we go...
The Disappointments Room is a horror flick starring Kate Beckinsale, directed and co-written by D.J. Caruso (director of Disturbia) and co-written by Wentworth Miller (writer of Stoker). The plot revolves around a haunted house with a locked attic room which contains "unimaginable horrors," Pandora's Box-style. One of many repeatedly-delayed Relativity movies disrupted by the studio's bankruptcy, The Disappointments Room was shot back in August of 2014 and originally scheduled for a September 2015 release. It was then pushed to March 2016, then November 2016, before finally taking over fellow Relativity chiller Before I Wake's September 9, 2016 spot when that film was delayed yet again. The decision to release it in September was made only a month earlier, with no trailer or even a poster yet released. Since then some marketing material has been rushed out, but expectations are low. Relativity studio head Ryan Kavanaugh tweeted that the film would be a limited/VOD release, but that decision has apparently been reversed as it's now slated for moderate release in roughly 1,500 North American theatres. Coming out with Don't Breathe holding strong and Blair Witch slated for the following weekend certainly doesn't boost its chances. Here's the trailer: Currently the worst five openings for movies in 1,500+ theatres belong to: 1 Creature - $327,000 2 The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure - $443,901 3 Delgo - $511,920 4 Heavenly Bodies - $1,114,635 5 Batman: Mask of the Phantasm - $1,189,975 It'll be interesting to see if The Disappointments Room can join this "elite" club of failure. |

I am hoping it can manage an opening above 2 Million but we will see. There have been so many ads on TV for it which might be too late. It's easily the movie opening this weekend I'm most interested in. I thought the trailer was good and I liked Wentworth Miller's Stoker a lot.

I also really liked Stoker and will hopefully be going to see this over the weekend. It'd be nice if Relativity could catch a break but I don't see this doing well.
I am totally perplexed at the flip-flop on the decision to go limited and VOD. Someone must think it has B.O. potential to go in for a moderate release and buy all the TV ad time... maybe they figure more people will buy it on video if they've at least heard of it coming to theatres? |

I will be checking this out Tonight along with Morgan that I missed last week. I saw the trailer when it was released like 2 weeks ago it looks interesting. I love horror/thrillers and it stars Kate Beckinsale so im willing to give it a chance. not expecting much but we will see.

I thought the real strength in Stoker derived from the directorial styling's of Park Chan-wook more than Miller's derivative screenplay.I love Kate Beckinsale, but she does plenty of rubbish films that undermine her talent and wit.I love a good Horror film and ghost story but honestly, this looks so hackneyed and over-familiar.A definite wait for Netflix on a rainy evening.

No reviews for this film either.
Are all the film critics preoccupied with TIFF? ![]() |

No, this Creature is a 2011 independent film directed by Fred Andrews, about a half-alligator-half-human killer monster thing. The only ever wide release from Bubble Distribution. I've never seen it but apparently it's nigh-unwatchable with a climax that happens offscreen.
As to The Disappointments Room, Deadline is now projecting it may not even hit $1 million for the weekend, which would place it at at least #4 on that list. |

I like Kate Beckinsale, though the trailer didn't draw me in like I was hoping. I saw that someone supernatural was no doubt locked behind the door (The disappointments Room itself) that makes Kate's character mad and unhinged, but that wasn't enough to get me into the theater to see it sadly.

Just got back. It wasn't terrible but it certainly wasn't all that good either. It was plenty atmospheric and the location, cinematography, and music were great. It was definitely more dramatic than scary; most of the "fright factor" came from some pretty cheap jumps. Beckinsale is good in the lead, which is a meatier role than usual for genre fare. Sadly the whole thing just sort of simmers throughout its runtime, never really building up any significant suspense or thrill. There were certainly no "unimaginable horrors" as it's all well-worn horror tropes. The official synopsis used for marketing is also misleading, as actually unlocking the titular room doesn't really seem to do much (the supernatural shenanigans have already begun beforehand). So there really is no Pandora's Box element to the story.
It was a decent time waster as a matinee but not something I'd bother seeing again. 2/5 from me. |

It was okay at best. More of a drama. There's too many cliche jump scares though. Someone standing behind the mirror when she closes it? Check! Random birds popping out and scaring her? Check! Dream sequence scaring her? Check!
What puzzles me the most is the film's budget. $15 million? How? It was 3 lead actors (2 of whom are completely unknown), one major location setting, and no special effects that I know of. 1/4 of the film is Kate Beckinsale walking around very slowly to fill up the runtime. Is her salary really that much now? I also can't decide if the [Show spoiler] And did [Show spoiler] really die?

I saw this yesterday I liked it but it wasn't anything amazing or special. You've seen this type of movie before and yes its far more of a drama/mystery than a straight up horror flick. Still I enjoyed it and Kate Beckisale and her character kept me interested in the film. Again not the best film ever made but by far not the worst film either there have been far worse films released in the horror genre this year. I can see how people could dislike the film but i didnt mind it and if it ever gets a blu release I will pick it up id say 2.5/5 or 3/5
