Default Movies : At Home vs Theater

I was just posting in another thread and my comments made me think

With the way home theaters are these days, the sound, the HD TV, BD.....I was wondering how many feel like it's sometime more fun and enjoyable to remain at home to watch a movie then go to the theater?

I have been in many theaters (this summer included) where the sound was horrible, the images were not that great, people talking, cell phones........

Sure the theater is still great because of the size of the screen but even with my 40 inch TV these days, I still find the it more fun staying home. I know that I know reserve going to the movies for just a few select movies during the year and I no longer go see certain movies like I would have 10-15 years ago.

Anyone??

For the most part yeah, staying at home for me is better. On the other hand I do love midnight showings of movies tons of people have been waiting for. It's so much fun seeing people dress up as their favorite characters and being a part of that whole atmosphere is amazing.

At my theater they have all DLP screens with Christie home theater sound systems so the PQ and AQ is amazing. I just like being home and watching with the convenience.

I have a pretty nice set-up (IMO) and as a result I don't frequent movie-theatres nearly as much as I did years ago. I still like going as it's a night out and you don't always want to stay home. But for the most part, my entertainment experience is gathered from buying BD's and Vinyl that I play on my system.

I would rather watch a movie at home. But there are just some movies that I rush to see at a theater because you just need to be apart of the experiance.

I go to the theater because os my kids. They tend to not want to wait to see a movie. I've seen Kung Fu Panda, Speed Racer, and will probably see Igor this weekend in the theater.

Personally, I like being in my own home watching movies. Plus, I can't stand the sticky floors, rude people, mindless employees that usually come with my local theaters.

Prices must not be too bad in your place, to get a popcorn & coke at my theater you need to re-mortgage your house. I swear they even have a financial office next to the concession stand to help people

Yes, I stand corrected. I should have said 2 Blus not 1.

I prefer to watch films at home on my Home Theater.

There has to be a fairly compelling reason for me to go to the theater and deal with a$$holes talking on their phones, texting each other, and loud pedantic comments throughout the movie.

Once I get my home theater complete, I may not go to the theater for a very very long time

Default Last movie seen in Theaters, Star Wars Episode 1

It's not that I don't like the quality at the local cinemas...... because PQ is great at most of them...... and it's not the fact that the audio in local theaters is crappy (and it is.... LOUD DOES NOT EQUAL GOOD) Even the last IMAX presentation I saw in Vegas, the dialog sounded TERRIBLE because it was very deep and unnatural...... and it's not the high prices of tickets and concessions......

Anyways.... the reasons I haven't been to a cinema for an actual movie in a LONG time, is

1) the fact that it's a big time committment..... first, a 2 hour movie, by the time you get there, watch previews, get home..... you're out over 3 hours.

2) I don't need to see movies the day they come out.

3) Distractions/noise in theaters is terrible.

4) With a kid, it's easier to watch at home

5) If the wife and I are going to get someone to watch our son, we're going to go out with friends.... that's Dinner and Drinks.... not a movie.... I don't have any friends who really go to the movies

6) My wife has seen my movie collection...... she won't let me go to the movies

It seem like I am not the only one, I can't wait to have a place with a nice basement so I can have something in the line of what so many of you got on here for HT. I Just don't have the space right now

Piecing it together, and building it up may be costly..... but it's a HECK of a lot cheaper than "space" if you don't have the space, creating the room to make it happen is a big expense.......

when looking for a house, I really wanted an OPEN floorplan basement, which was also finished...... it may be easier to install all of your gear and run wires before it's finished, but finishing a basement IS NOT cheap, especially if you have to water-proof.

Of course I ended up not getting the basement I wanted, so I had to make-do with an attic..... I still have grand thoughts of finishing one section of my basement (since it's a concrete poured structure with limestone walls, I'd only have to sound-proof the ceiling, which would be a piece of cake), but I could pour that money into countless other things.... so it's probably never going to happen

My problem is I got a weird home, done 30 years ago bought by my parents, bought it from them 10 years.

The basement as a 5 feet large by about 12 feet long room, the rest is just the garage. The house as more height then being wide, it make for some funky setup. The largest room is the living room but since my dad is still around I really can't setup anything in there. For him all that TV is for is watching the news Anyway for now I survive, sort of keeping this house while my dad is around (it's a long story)

for me it just depends on the movie and how bad i want to see it...if it's something i really want to see, i'll go - or if it's something i know my wife won't watch at home, i'll go (zombie flicks for example)...

Re your last line: It's obvious you have your priorities in order. And you're to be commended for taking care of your Dad. Trust me Pat...it's all going to get returned to you in spades.

Thanks, came back home 10 years ago (let just say I found out I am not a living in couple type of guy ) He's been very sick and well things have taken a turn for the worst. He's been worried he would not make it back to another Christmas (my dad love xmas time ) but we keep telling him not to be so negative, oh well! As we say here "c'est la vie"

As usual, Betman verbalizes it a T.

We don't have alot of friends who like movies either, strange considering how much we both do.

4,5,6 reallllly ring true.

"you've got like 700 movies, there's nothing out playing I want to see anyway"
