Pre-amp? - Blu-ray Forum

Quick question, what's a pre-amp and can it convert the new digital audio codecs (LPCM, DTS HD, Dolby Digital True HD) into separate analog signal so i can use them with my system that doesn't have an hdmi connection?
If the answer is yes, would the quality be the same?

P.S.: I have a PS3.

The short answer is yes. Depending upon which ones you get it should sound better than most receivers. They tend to be pricey, and you will also need an amplifier as well to power your speakers. The ps3 will plug in directly via HDMI, and if the preamp is new enough to decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, then it will take care of everything you need. However, the ps3 already decodes it all internally, meaning you can get by with an older Preamp that doesnt do the decoding, because it doesnt need to.
