Default 1080i & 1080p

Just have a question, for the people that could give some sort of definitive answer. I current have a 65" rear projection screen, is about 3 years old. I don't have a PS3 or stand alone Blu player yet. I do current have a xbox360 hooked up ot it, and it looks beautiful. However, with the tv being a few years old, the highest output/resolution it can do, is 1080i. Now, I may upgrade sometime in the next year. How much of a difference would I notice between this 1080i tv, and a 1080p tv of the same size? Would I be blown away, or would it only be a very slight increase. I asked this mainly with Blu Ray in mind, because for Xmas, I'm either going to but myself or pS3 or a stand alone player.

Thoughts/Opinions?

With my eyes, I can see a big difference. The difference also depends on the contrast ratio. 10,000:1 will be more noticable than 1200:1 for an example. Your tv will do its job despite being outdated.

depends on if you're willing to spend money on the improvement. if you only had the tv for 3 years, it's kind of a waste to get rid of it and buy a new, more expensive tv. but if you have the money, it is definitely a great improvement watching blu-rays.

I own a 65" CRT Rear Projection 1080i and a 57 DLP 1080p the picture looks great on both and I watch most of my Blu movies on the 1080i. You will see little difference in picture quality if any (IMO).

I think you have a few years left in that TV. If there is nothing wrong with it, it is hard to justify the expense for the kind of improvement you're going to see. I think you will be very happy with 1080i Blu-Ray, until you are ready for a new TV.

Both will look great, We have a 50plasma as the main and a 65HD rear projection(1080i) in the bedroom. Both look great the plasma is a bit brighter. The 65 has a Samsung 1500 hooked up to it and am very happy.

I think I can answer your question since I have a 65" RPTV, though it has been extensively modified and upgraded. My RPTV has no internal processing except a ultra high quality D/A chip just before the CRT's. All processing is done via a external processor, so this allows me to optimize my set for just about every resolution from 480i to 1080p. In my experience, sitting 8.5ft from the screen, the only difference I saw between 1080i and 1080p is a slight bit extra crispness in the picture, or you can call it sharpness. When you add in the ability to process 24fps film output from bluray, then you get a picture that is a little more sharper, more stable, with no noticeable film based judder, and no 3:2 pulldown artifacts. That is really it in my experience. Now the reason for this could be many things in my setup, but that is what I have noticed.

Now if this was me, I wouldn't even think about replacing a 3 year old RPTV just because it is limited to 1080i. While the difference between the two is noticeable, I do not think it is worth throwing away a perfect functional set just to get progressive. The only way I would trade up in this case, is if I am going to make a substantial upgrade that would give me drastically improved picture quality. I just do not see this level of improvement going from 1080i to 1080p outside of adding high quality 24fps conversion ability to the mix. That would be the only thing that would make me upgrade for 1080p.

No this is just my opinion, you can kick it, and me to the curb if you so desire.

In this case I do not think contrast ratio will play a big role. My RPTV is a 50,000:1 measured, and the difference between 1080i and 1080p just doesn't warrant a BIG difference comment.

Guys, thanks very much. I think I have my answer I think I'll spend the money (when it's time) on a home theatre setup, rather than a new tv.

One other quick one, not sure if I read it here or not, but the PS3 doesn't do 1080i? Would that mean that I would be limited to 720i on my tv if I were to get a PS3?

Sorry for the dumb questions

And just further to is point, may be in the wrong forum, and I know it's totally a subjective thing, but any recommendations on a blu ray player, with the setup that you know I have, which would you go for, blu ray stand alone or ps3?...yes I am a gamer, have a large collection of 360 games, and old consoles, just haven't seen the games on the ps3 to stir me, a lot come out on the 360 at the same time. For those of you who remember, I have the Panasonic 3D0 hooked up to the front AV on the tv, getting me some of the original Wolfenstein 3D

The PS3 will automatically detect the resolution of your set, and set it for that resolution. So yes, it does do 1080i, and well.

If you are a gamer, get the PS3 definately. It is still(IMO) one of the better bluray players out there, even without the ability to bitstream(which ain't all that important either). You can take my S300 bluray player, but if you touch my PS3, I will cut you three thousand times in two seconds LOLOL

Default I know nothing about HDTV! Please help.

I would love to purchase a Blu-Ray player for my husband for Christmas this year. I am not certain how much of an improvement the image will be on my 9 year old 49" Panasonic RPTV, HDTV 1080i. I have actually NEVER seen HD on this TV. We have never taken advantage.

I also have a fairly inexpensive Panasonic 5.1 surround. Not sure if this works with Blu-Ray to truly experience the audio enhancements of Blu-Ray. I need guidance so I don't waste time or money.

Should I upgrade the TV? Will it work with Blu-Ray decent enough? Will my surround system work?

And recommendations on players are always welcomed!

The TV will show a drastic improvement at 720p/1080i regardless! And if your Panasonic has either an Optical input or a Digital Coaxial input, you will get sound out of your Blu-ray player, but it will still be the DVD-standard lossy sound (regular Dolby and DTS). It's still good audio. But, you are right, it will not give you the full Blu-ray audio experience of lossless sound.

You don't have to upgrade the TV. Yes it will! And you'd have to check.

Player recommendations: Panasonic DMP-BD35. Solid, solid player.

What model 5.1 system do you have? If it has analog inputs, you can pick up the Panasonic BD55 player and enjoy HD audio since the player will do the conversion.

I doubt any HTiB units out there have analog inputs! Did Panasonic ever make receivers?

True, but the question had to be asked.

Yes the ps3 will do 1080i. The only issue i see is the native resolution for most ps3 games is 720p. If your tv is a 480/1080 output resolution the 720 signal will be down converted to the 480p resolution.

Someone correct me if im wrong. There is so many versions of the ps3 and software upgrades that may have changed. I know that some game makers are fixing it like call of duty 4 where you could uncheck the native 720p and it would upscale it to 1080. That just seems like a pain to have to check and uncheck for each game.
