My question is mainly those that have a huge blu-ray collection. Are you continuing to buy Blu-rays or are you upgrading to the new 4k Blu-rays?
Are you going to upgrade if your movie on blu-ray has a new transfer? Does anyone think the new format will takeover blu-ray? What your strategy going to be going forward? For me my collection has never been Huge. I have had to sell alot and was never able to build to a huge collection but now going forward, I can finally start building up my collection again. What I am probably going to do is continue buying the blu-rays but if it is available in the new format, I will buy if the movie has the combo with the 4k/Blu-ray transfers. Other then that I will be still collecting blu-rays. I am looking to buy a 4k HDTV and a player for Black Friday. |

As I do not have a UHD player yet (waiting for Oppo) I have started buying 4k versions selectively. For example, I bought the UHD version of The Martian - Extended Edition. It came with both BD disks in the BD set as well as the UHD disc for later enjoyment. It cost me around $19 from Foxconnect which is just as good or better than the regular BD price. The only BD's I see upgrading are documentaries, anything space related or select BD's that had horrible BD releases (I'm looking at you Universal) like the lackluster release of "The Jerk"

Generally I will judge on how much I like the movie and the transfer. If I want to own it but don't really love it, I will likely stick with The blu-ray unless a good deal comes along on the UHD. If I like the movie a lot, and it's a new release I will get the UHD. Right now I am just futureproofing. Most of my purchases now come by way of sales. Most of fox's titles can be had with the 30% coupon on fox connect for the price as the regular blu-ray, so why not. I am more hesitant on ones where I already own the blu-ray version. Some drop special features and alternate cuts. Like the Watchmen release only having the ultimate cut in 4K. But if the transfer is a big upgrade and the opportunity is there to get it for relatively cheap, I will probably pick em up. That said, I do have a huge blu-ray collection, and I will be much more selective with my purchases unless prices go way down.

It will be a while till I get a 4K projector. AVR hopefully this year. Player, next year.
Even though it will be a while, I'm getting 4K discs. No issue since they come with BDs. And the difference in price between BD and 4K isn't too bad. I'll be ready with a few when I go 4K. Used to always buy 3D combos. Giving up on 3D; I rarely watch the discs I have. As far as replacing my BD collection, no. I'd like to limit myself to replacing my 50 favorite movies. |

For all new releases I will be buying the 4KUHD combo pack going forward. As far as upgrading movies that I already own on blu-ray it depends how much I like the movie and if the PQ is greatly improved or not. I got my Samsung UHD player day one and currently have 18 UHD combo packs, only 4 of them are double dips.

Upgrading from DVD to BD was enough for me. I don't have a room large enough for a projector so I am stuck with TV's. I watched a UHD disc (Sicario) on a 4K TV and yes it looks great... but the difference between that and the BD I own wasn't great enough to sway me. Also, unlike DVD - BD's will still look good on 4K TV's. Most of the stuff I'm into these days doesn't stand a chance in hell of being on UHD. I still have many DVD's that haven't even been released on BD yet.
If the UHD sets drop down to the $10 level and there's something I don't have on BD, I'd probably start buying some then. |

If a new release has a 4K release, I will buy that one over a standard Bluray pack as the 4K picks generally come with a standard Blu anyways and it's only a few dollars more.
I don't own a 4K tv or player yet but I plan on picking them up on Black Friday. |

This is a very simple question.
For me, it has nothing to do with cost or competing formats. It comes down to one thing and one thing only: Where are the movies I want? And it's not 4K. There has been a trickle of 4K movies and I wouldn't buy a single one of them. I'm a catalogue buyer. Right now, I have 5 BDs in the mail: It Came From Outer Space, Salem's Lot, The Ghost and Mr. Chicken, Return of Godzilla, and The Astro-zombies. If those were available in 4K, I would buy 4K. They are not in 4k so there is NO decision to be made. I have pre-orders for Strategic Air Command, The Lodger, Return of the Living Dead 3, The Undying Monster and Waxwork 1 & 2. Not on 4k. No decision to be made. I have over 900 BDs. I have no fear of a new format. If 4K had what I want, I would buy movies in 4K. Everyday, I check the news about new 4K releases and, frankly, the news is pathetic...a Chinese water torture drip of mediocre movies. |

I am looking at buying a 4K TV in the seeable future and a 4K player once they drop in price a little bit.
As for buying and/or upgrading my collection to 4K, I see fewer upgrades for me this time around compared to when I upgraded from DVD to Blu-ray. When I first started a DVD collection I was a teen with no job. By the time I started working, Blu-ray had come into existence and upgrading my DVDs to Blu-ray has been simple and easy because most of my DVDs were not released on Blu-ray all at once AND I had few DVDs in the first place. This time around is different, I have a collection of 500+ Blu-ray movies and many of which are exclusives (steelbooks, additional features, combo packs, etc.) I also own several TV shows (something I don't see getting physical 4K releases anytime soon) My current plan is if I can upgrade or buy in 4K I will, if not then I'm not too concerned at the current moment. I'll update my answer once I'm completely updated to 4K |

Same here, HD is good enough for me. There will always be something better that comes along. If anything I'm switching to iTunes downloads going forward, hundreds of movies on a hard drive streamed to my TV (with the cover art I choose

For me, I think this will be the last physical medium available at retail for film viewing. Assuming the studios and distributors want the format to be a success, they really need to lower the pricing down to regular Blu Ray levels, otherwise it will never take off. More and more people now are switching to streaming (either legal or otherwise) so that's the way the wind is blowing, I think in 5 years we might start to see films not released on disc at all.

4K titles such as The Revanant and The Shallows are exceptionally stunning to watch. Catalog titles such as Watchmen and Man of Steel look noticeably better, but not significantly better. If WB were to ever provide stellar 4K transfers for the Dark Knight Trilogy, I'd pay whatever they were asking. I'm not about to replace my blu-ray collection. I doubt 4K will ever have as vast a library. I will however purchase new films such as Suicide Squad on 4K (and in 3D) that I normally would have bought on blu-ray.
