Default The Start of the Fall of Digital DL

Just thought this was interesting as so many so called "tech" sites are reporting or blogging about the future of Digital Downloads, wonder how they think people are going to do it with this in the future... We know Comcast had been doing it under the radar, then in test areas... now AT&T is following suit along with other providers. Oh how nice it is to just drop in a blu-ray and watch it instantly, with no download limits, no extra costs, no overages. I love blu!

AT&T begins Internet Caps

Quote:
Starting in November, AT&T will limit downloads to 20 gigabytes per month for users of their slowest DSL service, at 768 kilobits per second. The limit increases with the speed of the plan, up to 150 gigabytes per month at the 10 megabits-per-second level.

To exceed the limits, subscribers would need to download constantly at maximum speeds for more than 42 hours, depending on the tier. In practice, use of e-mail and the Web wouldn't take a subscriber anywhere near the limit, but streaming video services like the one Netflix Inc. offers could. For example, subscribers who get downloads of 3 megabits per second have a monthly cap of 60 gigabytes, which allows for the download of about 30 DVD-quality movies.
This will be eaten up so fast with HD quality downloads. Makes you wonder who's really paying more in the end... The disc lover or the controlled digital downloader. Its not going to be so cheap as they thought for the average Joe.

It's funny how all the Digital Download articles don't bother to mention that you will be nailed to the wall by fees from your ISP once they slap a cap on.

RIP DDLs! 2008-2008

I tried to do it through the PSN Network and they really should give a disclaimer before you download that it will take atleast 4 hours to download. What a mistake that was to watch the movie that night with my wife.

Personally I hate the inconvenience of Blu. I have to walk all the way to my media cabinet, open it, open the Blu case, take out the disc, power on the Blu player, put the disc in, close the player, walk all the way back to my chair.....and then I have to deal with all the buttons on the remote control. After I watch the movie I have to walk all the way back to the media center, remove the disc, place the disc back into the Blu case, and then I have to store the disc forever. I am just sick of the hassle....thats like ten seconds of my life that I forfeit for every damn movie.

DL will rock.

You gotta be kidding me, are you seriously that lazy???? Owning the disc is more convenient for me because I can bring it to a friends house, they last longer, plus movie extras, and it looks nice

Just do what I do and leave all your discs laying on the table in front of your tv out of their cases after you take them out and just sift through which one you want to watch. Unfortuantely I do these with my video games as well which can get confusing when I have my wife go pick out a movie, lol.

are they getting paid (by Mr Crosoft maybe?) not to inform the HD download quality is very far from the PQ/AQ of blu-ray?

Thats why I use the "Roll eyes" smiley....to indicate MASSIVE sarcasm.

I love Blu-ray. I see ownership of hard media as a good thing. I really hope downloads fail.

That sucks. I know a 720p movie file is about 4-8GB. That's with high compression. FOr streaming they would remove compression to prevent the image quality from being affected. This is really bad. Then if they goto 1080p on HD streaming. You would hit your cap faster than a couple of movies.

It's easier than that to exceed the limit. If you work at home and have VPN access to the office, to grab a few GB size files from the file server via VPN, your usage will go up dramatically with one weekend of work. This is especially if you have very fast access and don't watch what you're doing.
