Default BDP-S300...What settings ?

Hi all,

I want to be able to get the full potential of blu-ray discs, be it True HD etc, and i have the receiver to deliver it, however on the S300 i dont know what audio setting to use, it has various setting like Downminx PCM, Dolby Digital, what setting do i select for example if i wanted to decode TRUE HD from the receiver..very confusing.

You didn't mention how you connected the S300 to your AVR. However, to get the full potential of BDs including DD TrueHD and PCM lossless audio, you will definitely need an HDMI connection to your AVR.

Once you have made an HDMI connection do the following:

Go to System Menu.

Go to Audio

Set HDMI output to PCM.

The default setting is AUTO. You must change that to PCM for Dolby TrueHD. I recommend just leaving it on PCM because the S300 decodes everything except DTS-HD MA. You will still get the 1.5 Mbps core bit rate from DTS-HD MA, but at about half the bit rate of DD TrueHD and DTS-HD MA. However even that sounds pretty darn good.

Now you can enjoy lossless audio from DD TrueHD and PCM.

The downmix settings for DTS or Dolby Digital have no effect on the HDMI output. Those settings will not give you the full potential of BDs that you are seeking because those only affect the output from the Optical/Coax connection to your AVR.

Enjoy.

Or you could follow his instructions and set it to bitstream (or Direct) however its worded if you would rather have the receiver say DD TRUE HD on the front... either way its up to you....

Correct me if im wrong, but the s300 got a firmware update that decodes TRUE HD?, i would prefer it come up and say TRUE HD on the receiver..so basically don't go near the downmix PCM or Dolby digital as this only effects if using coaxial/optical ?

I am using HDMI cable of course from blu-ray player to receiver, thats kinda sh*t, after spending loads on receiver and new speakers (on way) my blu-ray player only decodes at half bit rate or something, what is this ?

The S300 decodes internally and passes the audio "Multichannel PCM", which is what it will display on your receiver. The PS3 does the same thing BTW.

If you want your lights to light up, you will need a player that bitstreams the audio to the receiver. (i.e. Sony BDP-S350, Panasonic DMP-BD35)

So whats your saying is, it can decode TRUE HD it only appears as multichanel PCM on the reciever, unless i get a new bd-player ?
