Well... here's a thought... perhaps they are waiting for an important time sensitive text or call? Perhaps they are talking about when they get a text or call, they conceal the heck out of the screen to check it for 2 or 3 seconds in case it is that important communique. You can't always assume that they are talking about doing something on their phone for 10 minutes.

I'm strictly against "using" your phone in the theatre. But, CHECKING your alerts once in a while isn't a problem IF the person isn't holding out in front of their face like grandma trying to read the newspaper without her glasses. That is why I said earlier that I always give people to the count of 3 or 4 before politely asking them to put their phone away. If they start typing or are checking every 30 seconds, even if it's only 3 or 4 seconds, I'll pipe up too. There is a matter of perspective that needs to be taken into account. I'll give them an inch, but if they try to turn that inch into an inch and a half? They will hear about it!

It's rare, but I do check my phone once in a while when I get texts. I don't get texts very often, so it's usually always something important. My phone is either in my inside jacket pocket or in my shirt breast pocket (screen facing my chest). I use the jacket to shield the screen and hold it extremely close to my chest for the 2 seconds it takes to see the notification. If I need to respond, I walk down behind the partition between the seats and entry way to do what I need to do. If I have to make a call, I go outside. There is a very small grey area of leniency that can easily keep everyone civilized in these situations.

If it's that important, they should probably see the movie another time. Or, if that's too much maturity and consideration for others to ask for, how about they get up and walk out of the theater if they want to check their phone? Disrupting the people around you - no matter how brief you may think it is - is inconsiderate, unnecessarily rude, and easily avoidable.

Even if they turn it on in their lap, it's still illuminating their "big dumb face" in the dark theater and disrupting the people around them. If they can't go a couple of hours without checking their phone, they might need to reevaluate their priorities...

This is the second time you've said this. You would rather somebody get up, do the 'excuse me, pardon me, excuse me' shuffle past you getting to the aisle, disappear for a few moment and then come back and shuffle getting back to their seat?

You would seriously prefer all that to somebody discretely checking a text or seeing who a missed call was from?

My local independent cinema in Ryde will deal with disruptive patrons when reported, and occasionally do a random fly past to check for anyone disrupting the movie.

But when it comes to really obnoxious, aggressive little bleeders who are ruining it for everyone, I have taken matters into my own hands a fair few times. When telling them to keep it down yields no results, I will yell: "shut the f*** up!" It certainly works, and comes with the blessing of the staff.

Only last week, when going to watch Doctor Strange again, the lady at the box office - out of the blue - told me how much she appreciated my personal touch with noisy patrons.

It's depressing that someone has to do it, but the breath-taking lack of consideration for those trying to enjoy themselves just makes me angry.

Usually it's if someone calls or texts me, and I just wanna see who it is and if it's worth responding to immediately (99% of the time, it isn't). But having an Apple Watch has made that so quick and easy, I'd be surprised if anyone found it really annoying (and if they do, sorry ).

How would they know when they are receiving an important text/call? I never turn off my phone in the theater just in case I get a text or call that requires me to bail during the film. I put it on silent so I take it out every so often to see if someone called or messaged me... also to check the time when a film feels long.

What phones are those? The most I see is a bright square for a second or two. Most people who do actually use their phones during a film put their brightness setting on the lowest it can go from my experience seeing phone users in the theater.

Seriously, nobody here is that important that they can't turn their phone off for 2 hours. I don't care how dim your brightness setting is, it's still an irritating little light in the darkness that causes a distraction.

If you don't feel like you can turn off your phone for the length of the movie - stay home. It's really not that hard.

I've got no issue with folks checking their phone quickly and discreetly if they're expecting a super-important call, but that's often not the case. If you're checking your phone every five seconds simply because you're expecting your friend Jimmy to send you a funny emoticon, you need to get a life. People spend too much time gazing at their phones as it is.

My family and friends are. If someone is in trouble, I would like to know ASAP. A lot of shit can happen in two hours randomly.

Then if the people you care about are in such constant danger I'd advise you never go to the cinema. Best to be by their side at all times.

Did you miss the "randomly" part? Just because you don't care enough about your family and friends doesn't mean everyone else can't be. It is just a simple quick check that only takes a second, get off your high horse.

Ok mate, we will all suffer just in case (in a million to one chance) something happens while you are at the cinema. Just be prepared to get it knocked out of your hand if you disturb me.

You must never go for a swim either? It's too risky!

I'm sorry but that's just dumb. You can care a great deal about your friends/family and not be addicted to your phone. They're not mutually exclusive.

How about people who are ** too important ** to miss one lousy phone call or text stay home and be ready for that life-changing call or text versus heading out to a theater? Are you serious? If you are in a situation where the next phone call you get is life or death then dont go out - better to stay home or at the hospital with your loved one thats on their death bed..... right?

People these days WAY over value themselves and how critical it is to get a hold of them 24/7. Its hilarious and kind of sad. Unbelievable.

I'm not talking about checking every five seconds, I'm talking about checking once or twice since it is on silent to make sure you didn't miss something important.

It's funny seeing people try to justify a terribly rude habit of staring at a cell phone. Years and years ago people were scared that TV was going to turn the population into mindless zombies. Cellphones have accomplished that to a much higher degree but now it's justified by people's perceived self importance of themselves.
