Default The Blu-ray.com Community's Top 20 Road Movies

Blu-ray.com Community's Top 20 Road Movies

I think that the "Road Movie" is one of the most fun sub-genres in film.

A road movie is classified as "a film genre in which the main characters leave home on a road trip, typically altering the perspective from their everyday lives."

Any movie that involves taking a trip/fleeing to a certain destination, or any film that generally takes place in on the road is elligible.

Something like Taxi Driver wouldn't be eligible because there is no destination, just a guy driving around New York. Something like Dazed and Confused wouldn't qualify since it's mostly teens driving around their neighborhood. Straight adventure films like Lawrence of Arabia, Lord of The Rings, or Forrest Gump do not qualify.

If you're in need of some examples:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Road_movie

I'm going by the general grading system of most of these threads.

01. 30 points
02. 25 points
03. 20 points
04. 17 points
05. 16 points
06. 15 points
07. 14 points

14. 7 points
15. 6 points
16. 5 points
17. 4 points
18. 3 points
19. 2 points
20. 1 point

Voters must have a minimum of 10 titles, and a maximum of 20.

Deadline is January 21st, 2017!

Yes, great one. It was one of my upcoming topics for a 'vote list', but I have plenty more, so I'm glad someone else is doing it.

So, just to make sure : 'Finding Nemo' and 'Finding Dory' count, right? Since they are road movies under water.

Now I have some extra motivation to finally check out 'The Straight Story'.

I don't do ranking. So this is in no particular order. However I would put Spongebob at #1 if I did.
I would only say The Hangover, The Spongebob Movie, Bolt, and Looney Tunes Back in Action really qualifies.

Those stretch it a bit, but I guess they could work. I would try to stick to films that actually take place on the road though.

To be honest, I don't think 'Finding Nemo' is a 'stretch' at all. It actually is a pure road movie (under water), more than it is anything else. If there's one animated movie out there that fits the genre 100%, it's this one.

But it's your thread and for you to decide.

Films such as The Palm Beach Story, Sullivan's Travel or It Happened One Night are considered road movies?

I wouldn't even call The Hangover a road movie (they only move around Las Vegas). Let alone Toy Story (they get trapped literally next door) and The Lion King (they physically can't even drive, let alone actually have any roads in them).

This was a really hard task whittling my list down to 20. There were at least another 20 that I didn't want to leave off my list.

01. The Passenger (1975)
02. Sorcerer (1977)
03. It Happened One Night (1934)
04. Radio On (1979)
05. The Golden Dream (2013)
06. La Strada (1954)
07. Harry & Tonto (1974)
08. Wild Boys Of The Road (1933)
09. Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987)
10. Midnight Run (1988)
11. The Straight Story (1999)
12. Coupe De Ville (1990)
13. Lost In America (1985)
14. Goodbye Pork Pie (1980)
15. Fandango (1985)
16. Race With The Devil (1975)
17. Wild At Heart (1990)
18. Cold Fever (1995)
19. Messidor (1979)
20. Hard Core Logo (1996)

How did I forget this? I'm going to have to revise my list. As for Locke, I'm not sure. The film's not really about the destination or a goal, it's just a character study that happens to take place in the car.

I have not seen any of those so I wouldn't know. Films that usually involve a trip or take place mostly on the road or in a car qualify. The genre is limited so stretches can be made, but I'd try to stick as close to that idea as possible.

I'd say The Hangover definitely works. The first act of the film is them driving to Vegas and most of the film revolves around that.

I don't think those qualify because it's mostly them hanging out around town, rather than it being any kind of trip. Dazed and Confused similary wouldn't really fit.

I consider the two Hitchcock films, North by Northwest and Sabateur, to be road films as they spend a lot of time traveling from location to location. High Sierra works for me in the same manner. If any of these don't qualify, I'll swap them out.
