I gave it four stars. Can't fault it on anything but my biggest concern starting it was that it would have to deliver something particularly excellent to ensure I stick with it for it's current five year. As it stands, I'm pretty certain I'll be tuning into Episode 1 of Season 2. But it had such a satisfying conclusion, I believe I could just ditch it now and not miss much, as they proclaimed, it did live up to being the ten hour film they promised. Other than that, perhaps the first couple episodes following the seasons opening were a bit slow in pacing, and some of the storytelling did get a bit convoluted as a result of the J.J. Abrams Mystery Box routine that flags up in each of his projects. That said it also offered up a lot of richness and you can tell despite being such a massive production, there was a very singular vision at play here.
It managed to capture the sordid melancholic tone that the original was going for, and I think it was perfectly managed by Anthony Hopkins cynical and enigmatic master manipulator head of the world. It was intelligent to utilise him as a proper bridge between all the plotlines in the show. I also liked how the show played with the audience in certain ways, even right towards the end, with the scene in the beach, echoed the audition scene from Mulholland Drive with how we all brought into their drama. It was an exceptionally strong start to a show, extremely assured in all departments even despite the problematic production process it had, you can ultimately tell everyone was confident with it moving forward and I'm happy they have a plan moving onwards as I don't know where they'll be heading next. |

As fantastic as the show was, anyone slightly concerned about how quickly they've forgotten about the show? Only been off air for half a month yet I caught the end of an episode the other day and was like "oh, forgot I watched this show". Don't know if it's just the quantity of good television taking over or just something to do with the overall sticking power of the show, just struck me as odd that something I was so excited to see each week and was subject to such conversation has already fallen out of the public eye.
