Default Sony UHD Bluray Players

I have a question regarding some Sony Bluray players currently on the market.

I have read that Sony will be releasing their first 4K UHD Bluray player in the spring of next year, UBP-X1000ES, however right now they are also retailing players that they claim can upscale to 4K (BDP-S7200). So what gives?

I'm thinking the players that they are advertising as being able to upscale to 4K are not really 4K UHD players. Am I correct?

I just helped my son with the purchase of a Sony XBR-65X930D 4K UHD (HDR) television (I didn't like the set he was going to buy, so I helped with $$$$) and I was thinking of buying him a UHD Bluray player and 4K movies for Christmas to really showcase the new television.

Appreciate your assistance.

The BDP-7200 is an upscaling BD/DVD player, but it doesn't play UHD discs. Sony won't have a true UHD player till next year, but Samsung, Panasonic and Philips have players available now, alongside the revised Xbox One. Besides Sony, Oppo's UHD player is also coming soon, possibly this month.

Don't all UHD 4K televisions also have upscaling capabilities so isn't it redundant to also have an upscaling Bluray player? I believe the Sony television my son has also has upscaling capability. I could see buying an upscaling Bluray player I guess if the television can't upscale, but if all 4K tv's can also upsacale, isn't it a waste?

Possibly a waste, but then again the BD player might upscale better than the TV.

That is an awesome television from what I hear. It was a little out of my comfort zone when I was looking for one and I went with the Samsung UN65KS8000. I'm pretty happy, but I still liked the picture of that Sony. So any suggestions on a 4k UHD BD player then?

Depends on budget. I think the standard player with good playback and good overall performance is the Samsung k8500 as a low to mid range player. You can always go with an Xbox 1S but I've heard many stories of incompatible discs and Microsoft needing to send out FW updates so they play properly.

Well I can't speak for the OP, but I've barely broken in my Xb1 and heard similar stories that give me pause too. So no need to upgrade there for the moment I'm kind of hoping my wife picks up the Samsung K8500 for Christmas for me, but I think I've sent her mixed signals on that one. BTW, are you the same ray that is over in the KS8000 owners thread in AVS forum?
