Default Warner's 4Q HD DVD Charge

From the article:

Quote:
Speaking to the trade publication at this week's Video Software Dealers Association (VSDA) convention in Las Vegas, Warner senior VP of marketing management Steve Nickerson told VB that the studio will release such tentpole titles as 'Batman Begins' and 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire' on HD DVD in time for the holiday buying season.
Quote:
Other A-list catalog titles Warner plans to release on HD DVD by the end of the year include the 'Matrix' trilogy, 'The Shawshank Redemption,' 'Twister' and through subsidiary New Line Home Entertainment, all three Oscar-winning 'Lord of the Rings' films.
Sounds like some terrific movies are coming this fall! Woo-hoo!

Yup, HD DVD is gaining support with the BD fan boys...

Still does me nothing. No way to buy any of these anyway for me (EU)...

Don't believe it until you actually see it. Same goes for some of those other titles.

Warner has shown support for both camps so nothing Warner does is a reason to buy HD DVD.

I am not saying there is not reason to buy HD DVD (Universal is offering some reasons), just that Warner releases is not one of them.

Unless they use Sony's MPEG encoder - then the BD's will probably look worse than the HD DVDs. That is something the BDA needs to avoid at all costs...!

The way I see it is, at least for now, Universal is the only exclusive studio HD-DVD has.

Everything you see announced for HD-DVD from just about everyone else is almost assuredly going to also show up on Blu-Ray at some point as well.

The catch, of course, is: Blu-Ray stepping up their transfer quality, codecs, etc. etc. on their discs.

A source close to warner from avsforum.com has stated that the first 3-4 warner titles will be mpeg2 as they where done before they got their authoring tools finished for VC-1. after that Warner will do all titles in BR & HDDVD in VC-1. they do not want to take sides and will offer equality between formats, based on what this source says. Sounds fair to me...as long as A) HDDVD doesn't lose out on extra's do to BR's inability for the time being to make DL disks. & B) Sacrifices aren't made in the name of fairness once DL disks become the standard.

I just don't want to lose out on something as a consumer just because one format or the other is inept.

I'd just hate to see a disc made at like 28.9gb's for both and BR is sitting there with 20 extra gigs that could be used for games, extras...trailers & then the HDDVD just has the Movie and audio. But to be "Fair" we get jooped. We like blu ray for the storage ability and promise of having MORE than HDDVD, i'd like it to get delivered once production gets ramped up (and i think BR will deliver)

To say that Universal is HD DVD's only plus is a bit short sighted. There are still plenty of smaller studios that will be jumping into the fray.

I'm a movie lover first and foremost and I will not play these exclusionary games. If both platforms meet my own internal value system standards then I'll buy in.

HD done well looks great whether it be BD or HD DVD. Studios committed to both platforms should be commended.

I'm an ardent blu-ray supporter simply because I think they'll provide me with the better content in the long run. If HD-DVD gets its act together then I may have to pick up an HD DVD player so that I can enjoy some nice audio video presentation
