Default Older Denon AVR 5800, Sony BDP S-1100, using digital coaxial but no DTS or Dolby

Hi guys,

First thread on here for me. I'm a rookie home theater guy but not completely dense on the subject matter. I have an old AVR 5800 that I purchased a dozen years ago, but financial reasons over the years I have not been able to afford a complete home theater. Now that I have the speakers, the Blu Ray Player, big screen TV I am on my way to building my actual theater room now that I have the system.

Obstacle. Old Components and New components, not getting DTS or Dolby Digital encoding to play on my Denon AVR.

Denon AVR 5800 was before HD but can still take in digital optical and digital coaxial cables for my sound from new components, i.e. Apple TV, X-Box, etc.

Video is not a problem for me for the fact that I can easily fit all those components above straight in to the TV and use the AVR 5800 to play sound.

The Issue:

The Sony BDP S-1100 can only plug sound from the blu ray player to the Denon AVR with a Monster Digital Coaxial cable. Including my X-Box, Apple TV etc.

Sound can play, BUT, only with the DSP simulation Wide Screen setting only to get all my speakers to project sound.

However, if I wanted to play blu-rays and other media, I cannot play it in DTS, DTS -EX, THX EX, or Dolby Digital.

Sound only projects through my Denon and speakers only through a DSP simulation and stereo mode.

I wanted to know if any of you know of what settings that I need to set my Blu Ray player, and my Denon to properly decode the DTS and Dolby Digital sound encoding from various media, instead of having to rely on DSP simulation setting on my Denon as the only way to get some sound out of my surrounds.

Any input on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Page 21 of your manual (audio settings):

[Digital Audio Output]
[Auto]: Normally select this. Outputs
audio signals according to the status of
the connected devices.
[PCM]: Outputs PCM signals from the
DIGITAL OUT (COAXIAL)/HDMI
OUT jack.

Change this setting to PCM

x [BD Audio MIX Setting]
[On]: Outputs the audio obtained by
mixing the interactive and secondary
audio to the primary audio.
[Off]: Outputs the primary audio only.
Select this to output HD audio signals to
an AV amplifier (receiver).

Change this setting to off

x [Downmix]
[Surround]: Outputs audio signals with
surround effects. Select this when
connecting an audio device that supports
Dolby Surround (Pro Logic) or DTS
Neo:6.

[Stereo]: Outputs audio signals without
surround effects. Select this when
connecting an audio device that does not
support Dolby S

Change this setting to surround.

This is what I would try.
