Kinda hard to spoil the plot of Patriots Day. There was a bombing. There was a manhunt. The Tsarnaev brothers were ID'd as the prime suspects by the FBI. They were tracked down and one was killed and the other was taken into custody. It would be like complaining about the marketing campaign of United 93.

But they could have put more thought into it than boiling it down to "Mark Wahlberg plays the same character again* in two hours of pandering".
Personally, I think a more interesting film would go into how and why the bombing happened (make it a Day of the Jackal-type film). Of course, such a film would never get made and even if it did, would be ignored or worse, criticized for simply existing. * - Seriously. It seems all his characters now are a. Southie/Boston guy, b. personification of Middle America, or c. both. |

Very crowded weekend, but Patriots Day will probably win it. Would've been a close call with Live by Night had that movie not received terrible reviews and lost all of its awards momentum. Silence is only getting released in ~750 theaters, so it likely won't make a huge dent in the box office outside of perhaps a strong per-theater average. I'm predicting all three of the new 2017 releases (Monster Trucks, Sleepless, Bye Bye Man) completely bomb, though I guess that isn't a hard prediction to make since they all look like duds.

Live by Night is going tank so bad. I'm sure it will make less than $5M.

Mike, your optimism for Monster Trucks is impressive. Paramount already took a $115 million write off LAST QUARTER. It's been finished for three years.
I'll be stunned if it makes $10 during its total run. Reviews might be Eck vs Seaver: Ballistic level. Fitprod |

I will be surprised if Live by Night makes $10M in its entire run.
