Fantastic news. Hopefully Warner Archive have more 70s crime/action flicks up their sleeves (if Criterion haven't come knocking) - Fingers, Prince of the City, Straight Time, The Outfit, Villain, The Squeeze, Sitting Target.

Kill Bill definitely took some influence from it (the "Showdown At House Of Blue Leaves" chapter in particular). It's not a relentless action thriller (like most 70's cinema, it's heavy on theme, character and mood), but it boasts an excellent performance from Robert Mitchum and a superb score by Dave Grusin. Definitely worth a look.

This is fantastic news...too bad they didn't add more special features to what was already included in the dvd edition... A Paul Schrader interview/comment would've been nice...

And I agree. I know it isn't their kind of thing, but an essay booklet would've been cool, too. There's an interview Schrader did with Film Quarterly (I think) way back where he discusses Yakuza in relation to the level of violence he had in the script compared to what Pollack filmed. He said more violence would have benefited the film if memory serves. That would've been nice. I was wrong. It's in Film COMMENT from 1976. Here it is: http://www.filmcomment.com/article/p...son-interview/ Edit: Man, I might grab a couple friends, an 18 pack, and double feature this with Frankenheimer's The Challenge! Oh boy, I'm excited. Last edited by JohnCarpenterLives; 01-07-2017 at 05:42 PM. |

Friends of Eddie Coyle along side The Yakuza make for a good Robert Mitchum, Richard Jordan double feature.
Love both films. I have the OOP FSM limited edition score CD. |
