Question Can 3D projectors keep the pilot-light on for 3D Blu-ray??

Being that there are NO TV manufactures that are continuing with 3D, will the existing population of 3D TV's accompanied by current and future 3D projectors be enough to keep 3D Blu rays around? Maybe long enough that for one day glasses free 3D to come around? I have little hope.. but things like 3 more Avatar movies coming.. and more Star-Wars... might be enough... but i feel like i'm grasping at straws here.

One thing that does hearten me is that there are 1000's upon 1000's of 3D 4k TV's out there already and so many people have a TV with 3D that they will not have to replace for 10 years or so. (assuming that 8k will be a tough very sell in the next 8-12 years)

That being said I will be buying an LG 75in 4K this year with hopes that the blu-rays keep getting released. And will be getting a 3D 4K projector as well.

I was waiting on Sony but their Z9D's cost too much. I went with a 65" LG OLED for 3D and will add a 3D projector soon.

I learned the hard way last year that just because a TV is new doesn't mean it will be around for 10 years. My set was barely a year-and-a-half old when I bumped it and the wobbly Samsung stand sent it toppling head-over, cracking the screen. I now own a much better LG 3D LED, but accidents happen, and so do mechanical failures. If any 3D fans have the unfortunate luck of their current set failing for any reason, they will be out of luck since they will not be able to pick up a replacement 3D set. They'll be lucky if they can get it repaired, which is also unlikely if they need a replacement panel.

Also, video standards change and technology improves. HDMI, HDCP/copy protection, file formats and codecs, streaming apps. A TV 5 years from now will be totally unsupported and it will likely not play newer formats, let alone streaming form popular sites. I can't image how a current TV will fare 10 years form now. Sure, it will still display 3D films from a 3D blu-ray player, which is why some people are buying a back-up set, but that's about all it will be good for. I use my current TV for playing UHD demo files and video files from Youtube, etc., since I currently don't own any media player that can support the newer UHD codecs. Only my TV can play the files from a USB thumb drive. But years from now this TV will not recognize newer codecs and formats.

I see some people in here saying maybe projectors will be the answer, but I'm sorry - projectors do not offer the kind of quality images that a current UHD 3D OLED can offer. The funny thing is TVs clearly outsell projectors by a wide margin, but the industry isn't killing off projectors. Yet that's the very reason they are claiming for dropping 3D - lack of interest.

This is the problem, people are thinking about TVs as if they are computers, constantly needing upgrades.

Even assuming that somehow they sort that problem out (because people won't be buying new TVs in huge numbers for any kind of incremental 2D picture upgrade) copyright/licensing issues and greed mean that online, streaming etc will always be fragmented and restrictive compared to physical media.

The fact is, as good as resolutions and codecs are going to get, nothing's going to beat 3D done right. I've seen it, I love it - you can't convince me I'll love anything more. Even plain 2K can look stunning, sure 4K can look even more stunning but it's just not 3D! Uncharted 3 on the PS4 looks super lovely and crisp in 2D. It still looks lovely and crisp in on the PS3 in 2D but halves the resolution when you play it in 3D, the quality of the picture takes a noticeable hit. Guess what version I prefer to play? Once you've been immersed in a 3D world, a better, sharper, more detailed and colourful picture sure does look nice, but it's still just plain old 2D.

They still make 3D cameras so 3D films will continue to be made and shown in 3D in cinemas. If they stop releasing films on 3D blu ray then I won't be buying the films in any other format, and I won't be the only one.

In the end, you have to give the customer what they are willing to pay for. Hopefully the TV manufacturers and studios will see sense one of these days and give people the 3D content and hardware that they want. If projectors can't do 3D as good as TVs then we need TVs, or better projectors. Whatever happened to choice?

Projectors will allow you to savor your current collection. I wouldn't use a projector as a replacement TV, I cringe at the thought of how many 3-5 hundred dollar bulbs I would go through. And although a handful of people in this forum were able to force the 2016 OLED into their budget, I'd wager that the vast majority of people don't spend 3 grand on a TV, 3D or not.
I won't buy a 4K TV until a 65 inch drops below a thousand dollars. I hope that 3d will be back as a feature by then.

I remember when vinyl records were discontinued. Compact discs and mp3s killed vinyl.

Today, vinyl records have made a huge comeback. Record players and vinyl records are highly sought after by some audiophiles. It's become a niche market.

Perhaps we will experience the emergence of a similar niche market for 3D aficionados (and all of us here on this forum are the leaders of the pack). One can only hope that one of the screen manufacturers (or perhaps a new one in the future) will respond to the demand of a niche 3D market.

I am hoping that the next generation of 4K projectors will include 3D. If 3D is dropped from projectors as it has from screens it will be another nail in the 3D coffin. BenQ has a 4K projector coming out but I could not find any specifications that state it is 3D compatible. This concerns me.

Has anyone here used a short view projector? How well did they work compared to a regular projector?

I love my projector, and love 3D on my projector, but I think it's not reasonable to believe that projectors alone can keep 3D alive as a mass market presence. If there is a silver lining to the news of the past few weeks hopefully it will be a sense from the studios that we've achieved 'peak 3D' and that we'll get some catalog stuff now because there doesn't appear to be much hope for the 3D market expanding anymore. Might as well sell stuff like Hondo, Friday the 13th, Spacehunter, Warhol's Frankenstein, Treasure of the Four Crowns and Bwana Devil now while there are still people able to buy and watch them. I mean 3D wasn't necessarily thriving last year and we got Gog, It Came From Outer Space, Jaws 3D, Comin At Ya!, Metalstorm and The Stewardesses, a lot of wish list titles.

I used a Benq 1080 short throw projector for awhile. Compared to a regular projector, I felt like there was no discernible difference as long as you don't get a defective unit. Also, the short throw was great for motion enabled video games and projector placement.

Not that I recommend the low end 4k TV's, but quite a few models of 65 inch 4k TV's are available below one thousand. I see 4 on Amazon for example.

As for as 3d projectors, I really don't see most people wanting to use them in their typical viewing area.

I think hoping for the 3D market to expand is a long shot. MAYBE if one day glasses free arrives and its awesome.. then yes. But until then.. My singular hope is simply that at the very least we still get 3D -Blu-ray releases for years to come.

I have the same projector and I have no complaints although it's my first projector so I don't have much to compare to other than going to the theater. The short throw provided me greater options with placement than a regular projector would but I'm told there can be issues with the video regarding focus from the center to the outside edges (although I'm not able to perceive any difference in quality but I'm not that picky).

I probably should have qualified that further by saying OLED or better. Whether projectors can be a placeholder for 3d TV's depends on the continued desire of a theater experience at home.

Many people state this, yet it makes no sense. Projectors take less space than a TV.

Depends on their room size.

I read an article on Foxnews about 3D is Dead. There wasn't any mention of 3D Projectors in it. Only 3D HDTVs.

I use my projector every day and my bulb has lasted over 6 years.

They are also much cheaper than 3-5 hundred dollars to replace.

They're like 200 at the most.

You can get a 1080p projector that is the the size of the palm of your hand for a couple of hundred bucks.

Do you live in a shoe?
