Blu-ray Samurai

I got it off Netflix discs (which I agree everything new I watched this year ended up on Amazon a month later), and I liked it more than LaLa Land. It might seem strange to compare the two, but I felt they had several themes in common, just grittier and more "realistic" in American Honey's case. The 4:3 framing worked nicely, and the cinematography was really pretty within that space. Now, I'm not a Shia fan and almost 3 hours of his leading romance shtick was a bit much but it didn't bother me as much as I feared, but the other performances were very strong, the acting good and real, the picture was picturesque and the production value razor focused. It was one of those films to relax and experience and not look for cgi explosions. It reminded me of some of Korine's work, that half documentary / half scripted style that indy does so well. Interesting, articulate, but not world changing. 4 from me

It's an interesting film with some powerful moments... not for the casual viewer. I loved Fish Tank, but this one doesn't quite measure up to her previous efforts. I wish she would stop using the 4:3 aspect ratio... it just really doesn't help the experience. Overall, good but not great.

I'm glad to see some people talking about this movie. Blind bought the blu on release week and really really enjoyed it. I think it's a little over long for such a free flowing movie, but it still works really well especially considering it was filmed without much of a script. It also had some incredible use of its soundtrack, with the titular song really hitting hard. I had never heard it before (don't really care for Lady Antebellum) but that worked in its favor here.
I kind of hated these people at the beginning, but was totally sucked in by the end having spent time understanding them, which I think is exactly the commentary Arnold is making. I agree with others that it's not earth shattering (especially in such a strong year for movies) but it's definitely worth seeing. |

But I mean, this movie did not NEED 2 hours, 40 minutes to get its point across. Could have used some editing that's all. Wasn't a terrible movie or pointless, just overly long for its own good. |
