Does the anti-piracy memo really need to be on the digital movies before they play?

I've noticed newer movies redeemed on Vudu have the Piracy warning. Why?!?! We've already paid for and redeemed the movie.

I've only noticed it on one movie I watched last year. Yep it's weird and unnecessary.

it's on Edge Of Seventeen on vudu and another one I saw recently.

To be honest, when there is a piracy warning there, it is simply that they did not take the time to remove it from a transfer where that warning was part of the encode. In other words, they just took the file, and placed it in Vudu (or Flixster, or wherever). The film transfer (with warning or rating screen) was established as a (computer) file unit, film and warning, at some point in time. To remove the warning before the start of the movie involves effort to make a new file; it's not worth the effort to remove it and make a new file (of that transfer), or they simply did not even look, and inserted that transfer into the system.

From what I hear, sometimes even pirated movies include the warning, mainly as a joke.

Edge of Seventeen is a UPHE title, pretty much all of those have that warning
