Yeah, that show time is a bit late if this movie is 2 hours, plus 20 minutes of previews. That's about 12 AM plus the drive home. Enjoy and hopefully the 3D lives up to the trailer's 3D.

Very true. Advanced search by Title is the only way I get results most times. Otherwise, it brings up a general list of anything in a regular search.

I hope so, looks like an interesting movie. I'm wondering if it's dubbed in English or if it's spoken in English, as the trailer mysteriously quickly skips past any shots of Damon speaking onscreen from what I noticed. No big deal as long as the 3D and action are great.

So I liked it. Not a classic in the making but it's a fun enough action-fantasy spectacle with decent effects. The 3D was good, above average even, but not great. It didn't really have the sense of immersive reality the best 3D flicks have, and the shaping/roundness of characters was pretty hit or miss. A few minor but noticeable conversion errors.

That said it was definitely shot with 3D in mind, not as a tacked-on afterthought. Depth isn't wholly realistic but it never felt annoyingly shallow and there are some nice shots of things like the wall or long chains stretching into the distance. As to the pop-outs; I was hoping for more, but it certainly delivers more and better out-of-the-screen moments than most modern 3D films. Some of the most obvious moments from the trailers are actually a bit underwhelming in the movie itself (the super slo-mo close-up on an arrow didn't seem to come very far out of the screen in my experience), but later on there are some really effective ones including axes and shields being thrown toward the screen, monster guts exploding out at you, and one very nice flinch-worthy bit in the climax where Matt Damon shoots an arrow right between your eyes.

Be aware that what the trailers don't show is that only two of the Chinese characters actually speak English; a good portion of the dialogue is spoken in Chinese and subtitled in English. I didn't have any issues with the way the subtitles were handled (the image never crossed over them in z-depth artificially or anything) but I know some people detest subtitles in 3D. The two English-speaking Chinese characters are the two most important ones, though, so it's not as if the majority of the movie is subtitled - I'd estimate more than half of the dialogue is English.

Overall I'd recommend it for 3D fans who don't mind subtitles. It's not a masterpiece but the 3D is above average and the movie is reasonably fun. I'll also note this is the first movie I've seen in Auro where I actually definitely noticed some overhead effects, albeit only in one scene.

Thanks a lot UFAlien for the 3D review. Nice description of the 3D and specific scenes.
I don't mind subtitles in 3D provided they're small enough as not to conflict with the main 3D onscreen.

The pop outs sound promising, and if the stereo 3D layers are as good as in the preview, I'll guess this is a nice medium to high medium 3D layered conversion with some nice pop outs. Going to check it out this weekend hopefully.

Glad to hear you enjoyed it for the most part, even though it could've been pushed more for the conversion.

Had to watch this today in 2D as no 3D screenings. During school holidays the theatre doesn't screen 3D showings as they receive too many complaints from parents saying their kids feel dizzy and get headaches. I know there's nothing wrong with the 3D I never experience any problems. I think most theatres have just lost interest in 3D.

Hopefully, a US 3D version will show up. Otherwise IF the UK version https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-G...lu-ray/173961/ is region free, time to buy from Amazon.co.uk IF they carry it

If this doesnt get a 3D Blu-Ray, then what in the hell is even the point in releasing this movie at all, this is a movie shot with 3D in mind. Not the shoehornet 4K crap

I'm reminded of Seventh Son, which was also Universal. It didn't get a 3D release, either, in the States. Of course, this one's getting a 4K release ... which is weird.

I *do* think it will get a 3D release somewhere, perhaps in some Asian territories.

Just got back from a 3-D screening of The Great Wall. It's pure eye candy. One epic fantasy action sequence after another, and I didn't find it repetitive at all. Damon is fine as the flawed hero. The lady commander, played by Tian Jing, is really the one to watch, though. Her aerial daredevil troops are all female, and they steal the show. Visually and viscerally, the film delivers exactly what I wanted when I first read the premise. But it does lack human interest. We get to know very little about any of the protagonists. Damon, Jing and Andy Lau have charisma to spare, though, which just about carries the movie through between combat scenes.

I really enjoyed the 3-D! The wall itself is definitely the star of the film. Its height and shape, and the fact that so much of the film takes place on top of it, are perfect for the 3-D format. The handful of projectile pop-outs are welcome, but I wouldn't have missed them if they'd been cut. Yimou looks for depth whenever he can. The fog sequence and the nighttime battle don't do him any favours on that front; but the pageantry and the vertiginous stunts benefit in a huge way. Overall it's a good, sometimes impressive 3-D experience. I'm glad I caught it on the big screen. Just don't go in looking for a game-changer.

For a fantasy comparison, I'd rate the film itself slightly higher than Warcraft, the 3-D slightly lower.

Just caught a 3D screening. It's stunning. The depth is medium to high medium with an ounce of strong. There were some cool pop-outs, although they didn't go out the screen far. I enjoyed the film as well.

Depends where you live, but sorry to hear your theater didn't support a 3D showing. I know smaller theaters are like that since they have limited resources. What theater chain do you have?

The big theater chains are continuing to support 3D showings and I keep going to see their 3D movies. Prices have gone up though... By $2 or more this year... For 2D and 3D.

Sounds great, thanks a lot Mercury Seven. Warcraft's CGI characters look awesome in 3D. I can imagine the lizards look great here in 3D.

The Great Wall 3D: Cinemark 3D. Middle Row. Bright, reliable projection of 3D.

3D Previews:
Pirates of the Caribbean 2017: Medium to high medium 3D so far.
Valerian and 1000 Planets: Strong 3D.
Kong Skull Island: Shown in 2D for whatever reason.

3D Layers: 8.5/10: It starts off in the desert with somewhat mild 3D, but from that point forward, amps up to medium to strong 3D layers and looks great, especially during the action scenes. The pillars of dark smoke from the cannonballs through the air, amazing, along with some depth shots looking down into the pit of monsters below.

3D Pop Out Count: 8/10. Lots of in your face, fast pop outs. Great!

3D Framing: 7/10. Lots of close ups crop off the faces, but with shots zoomed further back, nice framing for 3D. Especially the amazing shot looking down far below on the balance beam overhanging the wall.

3D Conversion: 8/10 Really nice conversion, I didn't notice any errors.

3D Total: 8/10. Medium to strong 3D layers and great pop outs. Really nice 3D conversion.

The movie was entertaining, though one thing that could work is to have an overhang at the top of the wall, so the monsters would have to find a way to get past it since they couldn't fly. But it's a fictional movie, so they had to work with the traditional design of the wall. This reminds me a lot of the zombies in World War Z climbing over each other to get up the wall. Fun movie and I hope it arrives on blu ray 3D.

Universal seems not to care about blu ray 3D after not releasing Seventh Son and Trolls on blu ray 3D recently, so if interested, please write to let their home entertainment division know that many 3D fans want this on blu ray 3D in 2017.

Great film and really enjoyed it in 3d . Vue decided not to show this in 3d and so i watched it in imax at cineworld . I posted on vue's facebook page about them not showing it in 3d and got this reply ; Hi Gary, our performances are scheduled dependent on public demand, however they are updated every Wednesday for the following week so please do keep an eye on https://www.myvue.com/ for any updates. What public demand ? This was the first day and their posters and trailers never even mentioned 3d !

'The Great Wall': Why the Stakes Are Sky-High for Matt Damon's $150M China Epic

Quote:
The Great Wall is the largest important release to date for Legendary East, the China subsidiary of Burbank-based Legendary Entertainment, which Chinese billionaire Wang Jianlin’s Dalian Wanda Group bought earlier this year for $3.5 billion. Wanda, which also owns the world's largest collection of cinema chains, including North America's AMC Entertainment, is understood to have bought Legendary in the interest of acquiring Hollywood-level production prowess — and also to get a piece of the international box office, where Chinese films have typically foundered, no matter how big their success in the home market (Stephen Chow's The Mermaid made $526 million in China and about $25 million everywhere else).

USA The Great Wall 3D

This is one movie that needs to be seen in 3D ,

We watched this in IMAX 3D last night and had a great time , The movie was entertaining and the 3D was really important to the visceral experience. There was at least 50 more people watching at this showing and about a dozen actually clapped (applause) at the end. I would give the movie - 8/10 and the 3D - 9/10 , you could really tell they were shooting the film with 3D in mind.

Is 'The Great Wall' Based On A True Story?

Considering its historical roots, it can be difficult to distinguish fact from fiction. So just how much of The Great Wall is historically accurate, and how much is pure imagination? Let's take a look:

Glad you enjoyed it Everret. I would definitely want to buy this on blu ray 3D and add it to my collection if it becomes available from Universal...

There was some humor and lots of action that was nicely done. The monster design, with the eyes on the sides of their body, was unique and original. Damon's character, with his bow and arrow techniques was very skilled. His team friend was also effective. I liked the motivations of the characters and how the story played out. I agree, the 3D definitely adds to the film.
